Objective:Knee osteoarthritis is a common degenerative joint disease in clinical practice, mainly characterized by pathological characteristics such as cartilage destruction and bone hyperplasia of the knee joint, and clinical features such as pain, swelling, and limited joint activity.Knee osteoarthritis is not only a negative emotional experience, but also a serious impact on people’s quality of life.Research has shown that the incidence of knee osteoarthritis gradually increases with age.Depending on the severity of the disease, there are various treatment methods for it in clinical practice.Whether it is traditional Chinese medicine or Western medicine treatment, its effectiveness has been demonstrated. In recent years, extracorporeal shock wave therapy(ESWT)have been applied as a relatively new treatment method and have achieved good therapeutic. In this essay,we investigate the effectiveness of combining ESWT with Meridian points on patients with knee osteoarthritis through clinical randomized controlled trials.Methods:39 patients with early-to-mid stage knee osteoarthritis were selected and randomly divided into control group(20 patients)and experimental group(19 patients),patients in experimental group received ESWT on Meridians points and pain points while the control group only received the pain points ESWT.The Meridians spot including Xuehai and Liangqiu. For all subjects,VAS score,Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index(WOMAC)score and 6minutes walk tests(6MWT)were assessed before and after 4 weeks treatment. The Criteria of Diagnosis and Therapeutic Effect on Diseases and Syndromes in osteoarticular Bi-syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine was also used to test the effect rate after treatment.Results:①When compared within groups,VAS and WOMAC scores of the two groups decreased significantly after treatment(P<0.001).For the 6MWT,both groups increased the walking distance(P<0.05);Comparison between groups,VAS of the experimental group was significantly less than that of the control group after treatment(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in WOMAC score and 6MWT between the groups.②When compared within groups, both groups showed the significant decreased in scores of WOMAC after treatment,as measured by degree of pain(both P<0.01),stiffness(both P<0.05)and ability of daily living activities(both P<0.01);There was no significant difference between the groups after treatment.③The effective rate was 89%for the experimental group, and 80%for the control group; There were no adverse effects observed in the two groups.④3 months after treatment when compared within groups,VAS and WOMAC scores of the two groups decreased significantly after treatment(P<0.001).For the 6MWT,both groups increased the walking distance(P<0.05);Comparison between groups,VAS of the experimental group was significantly less than that of the control group after treatment(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in WOMAC score and 6MWT between the groups.⑤3 months after treatment when compared within groups, both groups showed the significant decreased in scores of WOMAC after treatment,as measured by degree of pain(both P<0.05),stiffness(both P<0.05)and ability of daily living activities(both P<0.01);There was no significant difference between the groups after treatment.⑥3 months after treatment the effective rate was 89%for the experimental group, and 80%for the control group. Conclusion:ESWT on Meridians point could alleviate pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis,so as to improve the knee function and walking ability. And the pain alleviating is more obvious when compared with ESWT on pain points alone, the effective rate was up to 89%according to the ’The Criteria of Diagnosis and Therapeutic Effect on Diseases and Syndromes in osteoarticular Bi-syndrome in Traditional Chinese Medicine’.
