| The rapid development of Internet technology has now reached millions of households,especially during the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020,online communication using instant messaging as a medium has become an effective communication medium for people.In recent years,online communication has become one of the topics that researchers pay attention to.As an indispensable part of online communication,online emoticons have been widely accepted and recognized by people,and have become an indispensable part of the online communication process.Related research has found that online emoticons can effectively compensate for the lack of nonverbal clues in online communication,and can help individuals understand information accurately,thereby improving the efficiency of communication with each other to a certain extent,and achieving good online communication effect.In the current stage of research,there is relatively little research on the influence of the specific internet use behavior of emoticons on the effect of online communication(the OC effect).Therefore,this study uses a combination of questionnaires and online behavioral experiment to understand the characteristics of college students’ use of emoticons,and investigate the influence of the specific emoticon usage on the OC effect.In the first study,the questionnaire method was used to get a preliminary understanding of college students’ online emoticons usage on social platforms.The results showed that(1)WeChat is the social tool most frequently used by college students;(2)College students mainly use picture facial expressions;(3)Both the chat object and the chat topic will affect the individual’s use of emoticons;(4)Individuals are more accustomed to placing emoticons at the end of sentences.In the second study,behavioral experiments were used to investigate the influence of the intensity of emoticons usage on the OC effect under social or task theme.The results showed that the intensity of the online emoticons usage can significantly affect the OC effect,and the effect of online communication is the best when using medium-strength emoticons.Under different themes,the intensity of the online emoticon usage has an impact on the OC effect.Compared with task-theme,the OC effect is better with the intensity of the online emoticon usage under social-theme than that under task-theme.In the third study,behavioral experiments were used to investigate the influence of the type of emoticons usage on the OC effect under social or task theme.The results showed that the type of online emoticons usage can significantly affect the OC effect.The OC effect of text+sticker and sticker emoticons was better than that of high-purity text emoticons.In the forth study,it further subdivided the text+sticker emoticons in the third study into enhanced emoticons,denial emoticons,and replacement emoticons according to the different interactive nature of non-verbal information and language information.In this study,behavioral experiments were used to investigate the influence of different interactive nature of internal information of the network emoticons on the OC effect.The results showed that the different interactive nature of the internal information of the emoticons can significantly affect the OC effect.Using enhanced emoticons has the best OC effect.Based on the online communication process,this research mainly explores the influence of the intensity and type of online emoticons used in different chat topics on the OC effect,and on this basis,explores the influence of the different interactive nature of the emoji internal information on the OC effect,To provide theoretical basis for exploring the relevant research on the influence of non-verbal clues on information exchange in cyberspace,and to provide empirical support for further exploring the effect of information exchange in the process of online communication. |
