| Since the middle of the last century, public art has become increasingly popular in Western countries as a new art form.In China,as the government and people’s awareness of public art was still at a preliminary stage, the development was not ideal. As Chinese society progresses, people are becoming aware of the importance of public art.A successful piece of public art can reflect the cultural characteristics of a region and can also beautify the environment and improve the taste of residents.Chinese regional culture is the product of 5,000 years of Chinese history and evolution, and is a general reflection of Chinese thought, culture and conceptual form.Chinese regional culture is long-standing,profound and rich in splendour. The inheritance and development of regional culture is an important issue today, and traditional Chinese cultural elements have diversified with the development of the times. In the past, these elements were usually used in forms such as painting, calligraphy and architecture, but nowadays more and more designers are using regional elements in emerging art forms such as public art and environmental art.Since the 20th century, the state has attached great importance to the construction of the countryside, and the economy of rural areas has gradually improved. After the material conditions have largely met the needs of the villagers, the spiritual dimension should also be improved. As a result, contemporary art now exists not only in major urban galleries, but also in small third-and fourth-tier cities and even remote villages. This rapid change has led to the development of a related design industry, but due to the designers’ lack of scientific knowledge of the rural context and their over-reliance on existing design works on the internet, rural artworks often suffer from a series of problems such as lack of connotation, excessive homogeneity and lack of aesthetics. In addition to this, such artworks can also further degrade the already precious and rare regional cultural characteristics. The Lingnan culture is a treasure of traditional Chinese culture, which is based on agricultural and maritime culture, and has absorbed foreign culture and the culture of the Central Plains over the course of its history, both of which have combined to become the Lingnan culture of today. The rural areas of Lingnan are also a relatively poor area for the arts.In this context, rural public artworks should be used as a vehicle to create a regional culture in the rural areas of Lingnan, and to integrate and display the regional culture of the rural areas of Lingnan.Combining the traditional regional culture of rural Lingnan with public installation art can help to restore the values of rural Lingnan, promote the traditional culture of rural Lingnan, enrich the spiritual world of villagers in rural Lingnan, and drive the economic development of rural Lingnan. This paper adopts a cross-section of research methods, including literature, comparative analysis, fieldwork and questionnaires,to discuss and analyse the rural landscape of Lingnan, and to give examples to analyse the importance of regional culture to public art in rural Lingnan. The first part of the paper is divided into six parts. The first part is the introductory part, which focuses on the research object, background, purpose and significance of the paper, research methods and innovation points,as well as summarising the current situation of domestic and international research and defining the framework of the study;the second part firstly presents a discussion on the definition, formation and development of regional culture and its spatial characteristics, and then leads to an analytical description of Lingnan regional culture, dividing it into "The third part further composes the theoretical knowledge, first studying rural public space, then rural public art,and finally summarising the basic characteristics of rural public art through case studies;the fourth part The fourth part analyses the current situation of rural public art in terms of regional cultural elements, classifies the regional cultural elements in public art works into "natural environment","humanistic history" and "material culture",and proposes to classify rural public art into three major categories: "natural environment","humanistic history" and "material culture".The fifth section proposes a general design strategy, summarising the design principles of rural public art and the use of regional cultural elements on the basis of reading relevant literature and writings, extracting design elements from existing Lingnan traditional culture, and then exploring the use of regional cultural elements in the design. The final part summarises the whole text, and on the basis of the previous theoretical research,a public art design scheme is designed for the Duan Yan Cultural Village in Zhaoqing with the Duan Yan culture as the theme,in the hope of providing a little reference for the design of rural public art in Lingnan. |
