During the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,on the one hand, the art of calligraphy continued the concept of stele science since the Qing Dynasty,on the other hand,it was gradually changed due to the influence of Western learning.Zheng Wenzhuo,as a typical representative of the literati group of the Qing Dynasty, reflected the development trend and thinking process of calligraphy art in this period in terms of scholarship and inheritance of calligraphy. As one of the four great poets in the late Qing Dynasty,Zheng Wenzhuo, the academic research on him mainly focused on his ci and his achievements in ci,while largely ignoring his identity as an epigrapher and calligrapher. This article is based on Zheng Wenzhuo’s status as an epigraph and calligrapher, and comprehensively studies his achievements in epigraphy and calligraphy. At the same time, under the academic background of the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,I tried to use Zheng Wenzhuo as a clue to deeply study the calligraphy ecology of the late Qing literati, especially the Qing Dynasty survivors. The first part briefly outlines Zheng Wenzhuo’s life experience and examines his social activities, aiming to explore the influence of Zheng Wenzhuo’s social contacts on his epigraphy and calligraphy,as well as the influence of Zheng Wenzhuo’s academic activities on others. The second part mainly studies Zheng Wenzhuo’s epicology thought and achievements.Zheng Wenzhuo was a very famous epiphysicist in Jiangsu at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. In addition, the academic thoughts he formed in the study of epigraphy also had a huge impact on the formation of his calligraphy ideas and calligraphy styles, reflecting the unity of the dual identities of most scholars in this period,Jinshijia and calligraphers.Therefore,in-depth understanding of Zheng Wenzhuo’s epigraphic research results is more conducive to grasping his calligraphy concepts.Zheng Wenzhuo’s works on epigraphy are rich, and there are countless works, inscriptions and postscripts, including Zheng Wenzhuo’s research on inscriptions, characters, and seal studies. The third part mainly studies Zheng Wenzhuo’s calligraphy thought and calligraphy practice.Zheng Wenzhuo’s calligraphy concept and calligraphy style are not only the result of personal pursuit, but also the product of the times. On the one hand,Zheng Wenzhuo devoted himself to the study of epigraphy and stone all his life, and under the influence of his scholarship,he formed a stable calligraphy style and systematic calligraphy thought; On the basis of the inheritance and reflection of the calligraphy system of stele learning,Zheng Wenzhuo’s calligraphy art is not only an inheritance of tradition, but also a transformation of tradition. At the same time,Zheng Wenzhuo,as a remnant of the Qing Dynasty, through the study of Zheng Wenzhuo’s calligraphy, can also have a deeper understanding of the calligraphy situation of the Qing remnant groups in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.Zheng Wenzhuo inherited the stele learning in the late Qing Dynasty in the practice of calligraphy, and became a family spirit. His regular script and cursive script are based on the stele inscriptions of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and are integrated into a furnace, which has been appreciated by many calligraphers, such as Kang Youwei,Li Ruiqing and others, who think that the style of his calligraphy should be higher than that of Zhao Zhiqian. It can be seen that Zheng Wenzhuo has an important position in the history of calligraphy in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China.
