Globalization is the symbol of today’s world.Nowadays,intercultural communication becomes increasingly frequent.Thus,it is particularly important to cultivate students’ intercultural communication competence in school.In China,the focus of English teaching in senior high school is on the language knowledge,but the cultivation of students’ language ability is not enough,which leads to "Dumb English" and improper behavior in communication.Students’ low communication ability and insufficient understanding of the culture behind language is one of the reasons.Therefore,cultivating students’ intercultural communication competence has become the future trend in English curriculum reform.Situational teaching,as an effective teaching method,can provide guidance for the cultivation of senior high school students’ intercultural communication competence.This paper combines situational teaching with intercultural communication competence,attempts to explore the effectiveness of situational teaching in the cultivation of senior high school students’ intercultural communication competence,so as to find an effective way for the cultivation of students’ intercultural communication competence.This study is based on Intercultural Communication Theory and The Constructivism Theory.Two classes from a senior high school in Dongying were selected as the research objects.The experimental class adopted situational teaching,while the control class adopted 3P teaching.By the teaching experiment,this paper tries to answer the following questions:(1)How effective is situational teaching in cultivating senior high school students’ intercultural communication competence?(2)For senior high school students with different English levels,are there any differences in situational teaching in cultivating intercultural communication competence?(3)Are there gender differences in situational teaching in cultivating senior high school students’ intercultural communication competence?Research data was collected through intercultural communication competence test and interview.After the statistical analysis of the data,the research can draw the following conclusions:(1)Situational teaching is effective in the cultivation of senior high school students’ intercultural communication competence;(2)Situational teaching is effective in cultivating high and middle English level students’ intercultural communication competence.Low level students’ intercultural communication competence nearly has no change after the experiment;(3)Situational teaching in cultivating senior high school students’ intercultural communication competence exists gender differences.Situational teaching makes more influence on cultivating girls’ intercultural communication competence.Based on the research results above,the following implications can be provided:(1)Teaching content in English class should be consist of language knowledge and culture knowledge;(2)English teaching should choose appropriate teaching methods,combining language teaching with culture teaching;(3)Teacher should pay attention to students’ differences on English level and gender in intercultural communication teaching;(4)English teacher is supposed to cultivate their own intercultural communication competence and teaching ability.
