| Fusang is a 1995 novel written by Yan Geling, which tells the story of a Chinese woman,Fusang, who is trafficked across the sea to the United States in search of her husband whom she has never met,but is forced to "work as a prostitute to earn a living",profoundly describing the brutal existence of a marginalized group of prostitutes under male control. At present, most studies of Fusang are focused on narrative studies, other studies, cultural meaning studies,Orientalism studies, comparative literature studies, and English translation studies, but few studies have been conducted from the perspective of ethics, especially feminist ethics, and few studies have applied Beauvoir’s ethical thoughts to literary criticism and reflection on the image of women,as well as comparing his feminist ethical thoughts with the unique attitudes of marginalized women. The research on feminist ethics in China is scarce in terms of exploring "how it is possible" to apply the theory in the contemporary Chinese context. This paper attempts to analyze and interpret the idea of gender equality in Fusang from the perspective of feminist ethics.Firstly, this paper compares the concept of feminist ethics and discusses the important views of feminist ethicists such as Beauvoir,Gilligan and Noddings.Secondly,it analyzes the fate of the group of prostitutes told in Fusang, first introducing it from historical literature, then exploring the situation of prostitutes as sexual commodities and the reasons for the formation of prostitutes, and interpreting the relationship between Fusang, the heroine, and the two male characters under this status.Again, the analysis focuses on the feminine qualities of Fusang, the heroine of Fusang, and reads Fusang’s shaping of self-awareness and subjectivity when she carries out moral activities with beautiful qualities such as love, responsibility, forgiveness, and care, and dissects Fusang’s ethical care for the two characters,Dare and Chris, and how Fusang maintains self-awareness and subjectivity in the positive interaction with the cared-for party. In contrast to Beauvoir’s dispelling of the myth of the goddess,Fusang adopts a way of writing that constructs the goddess, pointing out that Fusang’s refusal to save and her five self-transcendence embody feminist ethical ideas: the two sexes are born equal, and the most marginalized woman is also an independent self-aware ethical subject.Only by attaching importance to ethical concern and the equality of the two sexes as subjects can we build a society that is connected rather than separated from each other. The thesis also takes into account the reality of China and explores a development path that is suitable for the national situation, that is,to improve the morality of human beings themselves with the joint efforts of the whole society,so as to achieve a caring relationship between men and women as mutual subjects. |
