Edward Hopper was one of the preeminent American realist painters of the20 th century. His oil paintings mainly depict the daily life scenes and spiritual outlook of the American people at that time, often giving people a feeling of emptiness, desolation and loneliness, and have a deeper ideological connotation than reality. This article mainly discusses the influence of Edward Hopper’s oil paintings on my own creation.First of all,a brief introduction to Hopper’s era background and personal experience will help us better understand his oil paintings and the reasons for their formation. The focus of this paper is on Hopper’s urban themed oil paintings. The light and shadow, space, color and loneliness of his oil paintings are analyzed for example. These four aspects have a great influence on my creation. The author not only pays attention to and learns the creative techniques of Hopper’s oil paintings, but also wants to deeply explore the spirit of the times and ideological connotations revealed by his works, and apply the research theory to my creative practice.I have created four series of works related to space, namely "Watching Fireworks from Thousands of Homes","Staircase","Gray Space" and "Hope Space".Hopper’s oil paintings have a profound impact on the selection of his creative themes, his creative techniques(light and shadow, space, color, flatness, etc.)and the emotions conveyed by the pictures. My creation also incorporates personal perception and thinking about study, life and society.
