Driven by increasing globalization, intercultural interactions have become more frequent.Meanwhile, issues such as misunderstandings or even conflicts that occur in intercultural encounters have also grown ever more prominent. This E-C translation material is taken from Chapter 9 of Principles of Intercultural Communication. The selected chapter mainly discusses how cognitive biases such as stereotypes and prejudices hinder intercultural communication, with a focus on the guiding role of the Synergy Principle in dealing with and diminishing intercultural misunderstandings and conflicts.By translating the text, the author aims to shed light on the importance of the Synergy Principle in intercultural communication and offer instructions on how to break down cultural barriers through cooperation rather than confrontation, thereby effectively improving readers’ intercultural communication competence. The source text is both academic and practical in nature. In particular, its introduction to the relevant concepts focuses on academic theories, while the case study illustrates the importance of the Synergy Principle in intercultural communication through the use of plain but vivid language and cases. In light of this, the author adopted Peter Newmark’s theories of semantic translation and communicative translation in order to accurately convey the contextual meaning of the original text and produce reader-friendly translation version in the target language.Guided by these two theories, the author adopted a number of translation techniques to address difficulties that appeared during the translation process. To be more specific,at the lexical level, translation techniques such as conversion of part of speech as well as extension and selection of semantic meaning were applied;at the syntactic level, translation techniques that include syntactic linearity, syntactical readjustment, negation, and change of voice were employed;as for discourse, the author preserved the coherence of the source text through reductive reference, the shift between implicit and explicit logical conjunctions, and the addition of logical conjunctions.Through this translation practice, the author has gained a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the Synergy Principle in intercultural communication,as well as the procedures of translation projects.Translation features interlocking steps, covering preparation, translation, and proofreading, which are all vital to the final quality of the translated text. The report is hopeful to arouse more readers’ attention to intercultural communication, deepen their understanding of intercultural communication and shed light on the selection of theories and techniques applicable for the translation of texts along this line.
