Stephen Owen,an American Sinologist,is committed to the study of Chinese classical literature.His early Tang poetry and prosperous Tang poetry are not only a re writing of the history of Tang poetry,but also provide a new perspective for the study of the early and prosperous Tang poetry in the eyes of domestic sinologists.In poetry of the early Tang Dynasty,Stephen Owen described the development process and poetic structure of poetry of the early Tang Dynasty with the poetic style of court poetry as a clue.From a general view of his theory on court poetry,it can be seen that court poetry mainly uses a three part structure.It is created on occasion and named by the highest ruler.The poetic style presents the characteristics of elegance and refinement.Five character poetry is a common genre form,The antithetical sentence describing scenery is the main part of poetry.The integration of the personality styles of Lu Zhaolin,Luo Binwang and others,the application of the palace poetic structure to other occasions,or the expansion of the scope of genres and themes,is the innovation and breaking of the palace style.Stephen Owen compares their poems with the rules of the palace orthodox style.Analyzing Stephen Owen’s way of exposition from the perspective of stylistics,the poetry world in the early Tang Dynasty is the poetry development history of the interaction between the formal and variant broken style of court poetry.The prosperous Tang poetry constructed by Stephen Owen uses the same technique as the poetry of the early Tang Dynasty.He puts forward the term capital poetry,takes this poetic style as the clue and basis,and divides the poets of the prosperous Tang Dynasty into capital poets and other poets by region.The capital poetry also has fixed style characteristics.Capital poetry has the theme of tranquility and seclusion.It is mostly written in social occasions,abides by the rules of the occasion,and usually adopts the genre form of metrical poetry.Wang Wei is no longer the representative poet of the landscape pastoral school,but the peak of the variation of Beijing poetry.Du Fu’s absorption of his predecessors constitutes a series of excellent works of variation of Beijing poetry.Li Bai’s free personality is the embodiment of breaking rules and ideas.He uses the theory of orthodox and variant breaking in stylistics to analyze the writing method of Stephen Owen’s Sheng Tang poetry,We can better grasp his research path of Chinese classical literature as a western scholar.Stephen Owen’s study of early prosperous Tang poetry can not only make Tang poetry better go to the world,but also provide a new perspective and method for the study of early prosperous Tang poetry.Discussing his research methods of early prosperous Tang poetry from the perspective of stylistics can not only provide a new research method for the academic circles to study Chinese literature in the eyes of overseas sinologists,but also find a new path for the research of early prosperous Tang poetry.
