Language attrition is a language phenomenon in which the ability of bilingual or multilingual speakers to use a language gradually decreases over time due to the reduction or cessation of the use of that language. At present,a lot of results have been achieved in the field of language abrasion research abroad, and the research on language abrasion in English as a foreign language in China has also begun to bear fruit, but the research on language abrasion in Chinese as a foreign language is still relatively small, and only the lexical abrasion of Chinese nouns, verbs and adjectives has been explored. It remains to be verified whether Chinese nouns and quantifiers will experience lexical abrasion after Chinese learners stop learning Chinese or reduce the frequency of contact with Chinese in their native language environment. This paper uses an empirical study to investigate whether the phenomenon of Chinese noun wear exists and to analyze the factors that affect Thai Chinese learners’ noun wear from two perspectives: a dynamic follow-up survey and a cross-sectional comparison between groups. The results of the study showed that Thai Chinese learners experienced nominalquantitative abrasion after they stopped learning Chinese or reduced the frequency of contact with Chinese.First, there was a negative correlation between Chinese language level and abrasion rate, the higher the Chinese language level, the lower the abrasion rate of nominal words.Second, there is a positive correlation between the lexical level of nominal quantifiers and the number of abrasion, the higher the lexical level, the higher the frequency of abrasion, the first words acquired by learners are the last to be abraded. Then, the degree and speed of lexical abrasion were inversely proportional to the level of Chinese language proficiency before abrasion, and the key threshold of Chinese language proficiency that influenced the abrasion of nominal quantifiers was HSK level 5.Finally,the causes of nominal word abrasion in Thai Chinese learners are the result of a combination of internal linguistic factors and other external factors. The internal linguistic factors influencing nominal-quantifier wear are the order of acquisition, confusability, generalization, avoidance of nominal-quantifier use,and negative transfer of Thai native language;the external factors are motivation, learning attitude, willingness to re-learn,and frequency of Chinese exposure.Based on the above conclusions,we propose methods to alleviate vocabulary attrition and suggestions to consolidate the effect of teaching nominal words from two aspects:vocabulary retention and teaching of nominal words, hoping to provide some data support and theoretical verification for the study of language attrition in Chinese as a foreign language, and to shed light on the maintenance of Chinese learners’ language ability and international Chinese education.
