| Figure-painting painting has a unique position in the history of Chinese painting.It is also the earliest independent and mature painting discipline in traditional Chinese painting.As an important element of figure painting,modeling is the main measurement point for the artist’s creation and art appreciation.In the development and evolution of painting creation,figure painting has formed the artistic characteristics and standards of "both form and spirit",which is the value system on which Chinese figure painting inherits and develops.As one of the most representative painters of the late Qing dynasty,Ren Bonian’s artistic characteristics of figure painting are of great significance to the times.His figure modeling has evolved from realism to deformation to both form and spirit and finally to simplicity of form and completion of spirit,gradually incorporating his own inner spirit in adapting to the aesthetic style of the times.He drew on the characteristics of ethnic and folk art to create bold innovations,and also used the new concepts of Western art,thus creating a new style of figure painting that is quaint and novel,popular and lively.He added a new vitality and breath to the old-fashioned late Qing painting world,and thus became a distinguished artist of the Maritime School and even of the Ming and Qing figure painters.This thesis is divided into four chapters to explore the transformation and innovation of Ren Bonian’s figure painting art,based on his representative works on different subjects.The first chapter briefly outlines the characteristics of Ren Bonian’s figure painting.From the development of his artistic practice,the origins of Ren’s mastery of figure painting and the reasons for the formation of his unique stylistic style are sorted out.The second chapter classifies Ren Bonian’s figure paintings into five types through pictorial analysis,and summarizes their stylistic characteristics.The portraits of Ren Bonian vary in style from period to period,thus revealing the changes in Ren’s approach to figure painting.In his portraits of historical tales,literary anecdotes,ladies,gods and goddesses,Ren Bonian learns from the past and adopts a variety of stylistic approaches.In addition,he explored a distinctive painting language in his’ Urban Custom Paintings’.The third chapter clarifies the innovative style of Ren Bonian’s figure painting.In the concept of modeling Ren Bonian is based on the realities of social life and attaches importance to the harmonious unity of evocation and objective truth.Through the flexible use of traditional artistic language and the study of Western painting techniques,Ren’s approach to the modelling of his figure painting has made a major breakthrough and change.By comparing Ren Bonian with figure painters of similar styles,the novelty of Ren’s style and artistic characteristics in the art of figure modelling is more clearly presented.The fourth chapter summarises the value and influence of Ren Bonian’s figure painting modelling art and the inspiration for the author’s theoretical study and painting creation.Ren Bonian’s figure paintings were created during the transitional period of the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period.In the midst of the changes of the times,his painting was constantly innovating and developing.On the basis of his portraits,he deformed the figures to add a sense of antiquity and naturalness to them.He creatively combined the creation of the figure with the fashion of the times,not only expressing the aesthetics of the era,but also incorporating the realistic techniques and colours of Western painting into the portrayal of the figure.As a result,Ren Bonian’s distinctive stylistic features in figure painting have been formed,making him an outstanding painter since the late Qing Dynasty. |
