With the acceleration of high technology and globalization, the exchanges between countries in technology and economy are increasingly frequent,in which translation plays a crucial role. The translated material for this report is found by the translator with the company’s consent, and it comes from a book on hydraulic systems. The content is selected from Chapter 8,including the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of the hydraulic system.Guided by the translation shift theories of Catford,Al-Zoubi and Al-Hassnawi,this thesis analyzes and summarizes the translation shift phenomena in the translation from the micro and macro levels. This report explores translation shift phenomena at the micro level from the perspective of level shift and category shift according to Catford’s translation shift theory.Concerning level shift, this paper analyzes the shift between vocabulary and grammar, due to the differences in tense and plural expressions between Chinese and English. The category shift includes structure, class, unit and intra-system shifts, and the paper makes a case study of the first three. In structure shift, the shift from passive voices to active voices is indispensable,as the passive voice is frequently used in English, whereas the active voice is commonly used in Chinese. In addition, owing to the distinctions in language expressions, such as parataxis in Chinese and hypotaxis in English, there are often shifts between subject-prominent sentences and topic-prominent sentences, postpositional attributives and prepositional attributives, affirmative expressions and negative expressions in translation. As for class shift, since compared with English,Chinese tends to be more dynamic and verbs are more universally employed, the paper mainly summarizes the shift from nouns, prepositions and adjectives in English to Chinese verbs.Unit shift is mainly reflected in the shifts of words to phrases, shifts of phrases to clauses, and shifts of phrases to words, making the expression more in line with the context and natural.Al-Zoubi and Al-Hassnawi’s translation shift theory is divided into micro and macro analyses.According to their theory at the macro level, this report analyzes the textual, pragmatic, rhetorical, stylistic and semantic shifts in translation.First,at the textual level, the shifts of cohesion between Chinese and English are discussed. For example, the possessive pronouns in English could often be omitted when translated into Chinese. Then,at the pragmatic level, this paper discusses the shift phenomena caused by context.Additionally, rhetorical shifts are sometimes required as every language has its own rhetorical devices. Also, there is a phenomenon of stylistic shift, since different language habits and authors’ style generate distinct expression style. Finally, the semantic shift caused by cultural differences is analyzed. This thesis attempts to combine Catford’s,and Al-Zoubi and Al-Hassnawi’s translation shift theories to establish a more comprehensive and systematic theoretical model for guiding the translation of hydraulic system-related scientific and technical texts. This report explores the application of translation shift theory in hydraulic system texts, and hopes to provide a reference for translation practice of related texts. However, due to the time limit, insufficient theoretical knowledge reserves, the translation ability and other factors, there are some expressions in the translation to be polished urgently, and these deficiencies will be overcome in future translation practice. |
