Military Terms Research On Translation Processes And Methods

Military materials imported from abroad are undoubtedly very important for our country to understand and learn from other countries’ advanced technologies,strategies,and tactics.The accuracy of military text translation largely depends on the accurate identification and translation of the terminology.Therefore,this translation practice report uses the MCWP 3-01 Offensive and Defensive Tactics(excerpts)as the source of material,drawing on the terminology analysis and translation methods of the predecessor,and adopts the workflow of terminology recognition,terminology understanding and terminology translation in the translation practice process.First,it is necessary to accurately identify the terminology in the material a common one or a technical one;then state problems that may occur in terminology comprehension;and finally,translate the terminology into the target language.In the translation process,if there exist corresponding Chinese terms,it is necessary to search for a suitable translation.In this translation practice,for terminology that are lacking of existing translation,the following four translation methods are applied:literal translation,amplification,restitution,and annotation.Most of the simple and general compound terminology can be translated by literal translation;for terminology that cannot accurately convey the meaning of the original word,amplification is suitable;as for the abbreviation terminology,they can be translated through restitution;and the method of annotation can be adopted to terminology that contain some military information.It is hoped that this terminology translation process will ensure the accuracy of terminology.
