The ladies painting is an important element of decorative arts on ceramics in Jingdezhen during the Ming and Qing dynasties,and its contents can reflect the social environment and aesthetic preferences at that time.Its historical value is particularly high.Currently,most studies focus on ladies painting with overglaze color from the Ming and Qing dynasties.The relevant study in the late Qing and the Republic of Chinas is relatively scarce.However,during this period,there is a noticeable change in the ladies painting with overglaze color compared to the Ming and Qing dynasties,and there are numerous painters of decorative arts who have made important contributions to it,which has far-reaching significance for further research.This article first conducts a classification study of ladies painting with overglaze color during the late Qing and the Republic of China in Jingdezhen.It divides it into four categories based on the type of decorative painting: antique color painting,pink painting,light-gray painting,and new color painting.It also divides it into two categories based on the type of theme:ladies painting depicting mythical legends and ladies painting depicting secular life.The ladies painting depicting mythical legends portrays the ladies that people yearn for,while the ladies painting depicting secular life depicts the ladies from daily literature and daily life.On this basis,this article conducts a stage study of ladies painting during the late Qing and the Republic of China.It divides it into three periods.In the late Qing period,traditional female attire dominates on the decorative painting.In the early Republic period,the ladies painting features female attire known as "civilized and modern" in decorative painting,and in the late Republic period,it returns to traditional classical attire.Unlike in the late Qing period,the decorative painting on the surface in the late Republic period features new pink painting.Finally,this article analyzes the causes of the changes in ladies painting with overglaze color during the late Qing and the Republic of China and summarizes them as follows: the social background and ceramic industry reform in Jingdezhen are important factors that contribute to the changes;the women’s movement ideology provides a philosophical foundation for the changes;the innovation inladiespainting is the direct cause of the changes;and the change in glaze color is the material prerequisite that affects the changes.
