Abstract/Summary:
With the development of positive psychology, people are paying more and more attention to their experience of well-being,and studying the antecedent variables of subjective well-being and their influencing mechanisms is of great significance for both theoretical and practical guidance in this field of study.Previous research has found that subjective well-being is negatively influenced by perceptions of stress, and that not only do perceptions of stress enhance the frequency of mental wandering, but that the frequency of mental wandering also affects individuals’ subjective well-being.Thus,mental wanderlust may play a mediating role in this process. The exploration of factors that can protect individuals’ subjective well-being also becomes a very important aspect.Self-control represents the level of control individuals have over their own thinking, emotions, behaviour, etc.,and the mechanisms underlying its role in the frequency of mental wandering and subjective well-being have not been explored in depth in China. In this paper,we review the previous studies on subjective well-being,stress perception,self-control and mind wandering frequency, and investigate the relationship between the four variables by means of a questionnaire. In this study,1449 university students in Sichuan Province were measured using the Stress Perception Scale, the Self-Control Scale, the Mind Wandering Frequency Scale and the General Well-being Scale.SPSS26.0 and process4.1 were used to conduct statistical and path analysis on the collected data. The following results were obtained from this study.(1)Correlation analysis showed that subjective well-being was significantly correlated with stress perception, mind wandering frequency, and self-control.Subjective well-being was significantly negatively correlated with stress perception and mind wandering frequency and positively correlated with self-control;self-control was significantly negatively correlated with stress perception and mind wandering frequency;stress perception was significantly positively correlated with mind wandering frequency.(2)Mental drift frequency partially mediates the relationship between stress perception and subjective well-being in university students.Stress perception can directly and significantly predict subjective well-being,and can also indirectly influence subjective well-being through the mediating variable of mental drift.(3)Self-control significantly moderated the latter half of the mediating effect between stress perception and subjective well-being,i.e.,it moderated the relationship between mind wandering and subjective well-being.Individuals with higher levels of self-control were more likely to have their subjective well-being influenced by mind wandering. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest that stress perception, mental wandering,self-control and subjective well-being form a mediated model. This model theoretically reveals how stress perception affects subjective well-being,and when this effect is stronger or weaker. In practical terms, the model provides important guidance on how to enhance the subjective well-being of university students through the intervention of a mediating variable(mind-wandering)and a moderating variable(self-control).
