In Cold Blood is a non-fiction novel created by Truman Capote, which was based on a murder case in Kansas in 1959.After its publication,it aroused huge social repercussions.Nowadays, scholars in China and abroad focus on the theme and writing style of the work, but rarely on dreams in the work. Therefore, this thesis studies the dreams from the perspective of Freud’s dream interpretation theory.Dream is the image-like language in the unconscious condition, and sometimes the unconscious mental activities of the dreamer can be discovered through dreams.Through close reading of the night dreams and daydreams of the protagonist Perry, this thesis finds that dreams and reality in the work are complementary and have created a fusion, jointly promoted the narrative effect of the development of the story;and dreams also highlight the theme of trauma recurrence and subject dislocation. The grotesque beauty, tragic beauty and implication beauty presented by dreams in the text not only reveal the emotion behind the dream images, but also bring readers a unique aesthetic experience. The special analytical perspective from the dream research in the text makes the insight possible of the growing condition of American minority youths and the lack of humanitarian care throughout their life journeys. |
