| Chinese ancient poetry, the essence of Chinese traditional culture, has been favored by many scholars in the study of Chinese language for many years. In the process of the creation of Chinese ancient poems, poets are deeply influenced by their life experience and the background of the times, and often use metonymy to express their thoughts and emotions. In the process of metonymy application, different poets manifest the connotations of poems from different cognitive dimensions under construal theory. The five dimensions of construal theory summarized by American cognitive linguist R.Langacker, namely: specificity, scope, background, perspective and salience, were used to analyze metonymy expressions in Chinese ancient poems while exploring and discovering the cognitive mechanism of metonymy in Chinese ancient poems with different types in the meaning construction process of poems. It was found that the construction of metonymic meaning in Chinese ancient poems from the perspective of construal theory is closely related to the poet’s use of images in the ancient poem, the historical background of the ancient poem, and the poet’s life experience. Some images in Chinese ancient poems can better manifest the implied meaning through metonymy, which highlights the meaning of Chinese ancient poems. With great practical significance and reference value to the indigenous research of construal theory in cognitive linguistics attached, this study,on the one hand, demonstrates the applicability of construal theory in the analysis of Chinese ancient poems and expands the theoretical perspective of Chinese ancient poems research;on the other hand, enriches and expands the practical application of construal theory, which helps to realize the indigenous research of construal theory in China. |
