In modern Chinese, there are a large number of Multi-Item Attribute of Binding Noun(MABN),i.e.structures consisting of several nouns closely connected,in which the central component of the noun is located at the end of the structure, preceded by a combination of several nouns to qualify and describe the head noun. This thesis uses the CCL Corpus including the Modern Chinese Corpus and the English-Chinese Parallel Corpus to observe the Chinese MABN from cognitive, semantic and pragmatic perspectives, and to describe the manifestations and internal mechanisms of noun adjectivalization in the MABN structure. Then, the sequencing rules, constraint mechanisms and causes of prepositions in Chinese MABN structures are summarized, and the formation mechanism of Chinese MABN is explored. Finally, this thesis compares the similarities and differences between the Chinese MABN and its English translation in terms of linguistic forms and sequencing rules. At the same time, the internal motivations that cause the differences between English and Chinese expression forms are summarized. The major finding are as follows:(1)In Chinese MABN,multiple binding nouns are located before the central noun as prepositional determiners, and the prepositional noun determiner has the characteristics of an adjective,i.e.the noun is adjectivalized.(2)There are regular combinations of prepositional noun attributes. In attributes with flexible order, the number of attributes is not restricted by order when there are less than three, and they can be interchanged;when there are at least three attributes, the descriptive attribute at the top is free, while the prepositions that do not involve central attributes or distinguishing features have a fixed position. In the case of prepositions with fixed order, the order of attributes is “scope attribute > integrated attribute > integrated attribute”.(3)The structures of MABN in Chinese and their English translations are different.Chinese relies on word order to distinguish various semantic relationships, while English tends to grammaticalize conceptual relationships and uses function words such as “of”,adjectives or possessives to express modification and restriction relationships. The reasons for this apparent difference include diversities in thinking styles and sentence expansion mechanisms. This thesis analyses the structural features, formation mechanisms and internal motivations of Chinese MABN from three perspectives: cognitive, pragmatic and syntactic, and systematically describes the differences in the use of English-Chinese.The thesis concludes that the occurrence of adjectivalization of the pre-attribute is the result of a combination of mechanisms such as projection and conceptual metonymy. The mechanisms for realization in expressing the meaning of such structure in English and Chinese are clearly different, and the results are the differences in the way the two languages are organized and in the mechanisms of sentence expansion. In addition, with the help of a large number of examples,it is useful to observe the rules of use and the formation mechanism of specific linguistic structures, and to systematically analyze the characteristics of MABN in modern Chinese. At the same time, this thesis provides a detailed comparison of the realization forms and motivation of Chinese MABN and English translation, which is a useful attempt of English-Chinese comparison and provides some reference for English-Chinese translation.
