In modern China, overseas students shoulder a great historical mission. They are at the forefront of the era, serving as both mediators and bearers of cultural exchange between China and foreign countries, and they are also pioneers driving China’s modern transformation. This article examines the activities of artists who studied in Japan in the early 20th century, such as their creations, exchanges, and teaching,in order to trace the evolution of their ideological transformation. It explores the influence of these artists who studied in Japan on the development of Chinese art and reflects on the modern value and significance of Sino-foreign art exchanges, which is the purpose of the research topic.Firstly,by elucidating the ideological and cultural background of social transformation in the early 20th century, analyzing the characteristics of Japanese art education, and exploring the reasons why artists chose to study in Japan, the article further investigates the learning and creative overview of these artists who studied in Japan. It becomes evident that these artists who studied in Japan pursued learning and exchange within a multicultural environment, where they not only acquired knowledge of traditional Japanese art but also had exposure to Western modern art.Secondly, based on the clarification of the artistic ideological development and transformation among these artists who studied in Japan, the article discusses the relationship between these artists and the Lingnan School of Painting, the Leftist Art Movement, and the Western Painting Movement. It explores the endeavors of artists who studied in Japan, represented by Chen Shizeng,in preserving and envisioning literati painting, prompting a reevaluation of its modern value.Furthermore, the article highlights the active involvement of these artists who studied in Japan in founding art societies and art schools, making them a significant force in modern Chinese art education. They also played a pivotal role in the dissemination of modern art ideas through translation and compilation of art books, while vigorously promoting the development of comics and printmaking, thereby exerting a profound influence on the establishment of the early 20th-century Chinese art education system and the dissemination of modern artistic ideas.Through a comparison of the artistic concepts between artists who studied in Japan and those who studied in France,a deeper understanding of the intrinsic connection between artists who studied in Japan and the development of Chinese art is achieved. In conclusion, cultural exchange between China and Japan has a long history. In the early 20th century, artists who studied in Japan contributed their own strength to the construction of China’s modern art education system through their process of learning and integration.Simultaneously,in their pursuit of artistic creation for modern transformation, they reflected on the modern value of Chinese culture, leading to the localization of Chinese art.
