The National English Curriculum Standards for General Senior High School(2017 Edition,2020 Revision)points out that the teaching assessment based on the key competencies of English subjects should be primarily based on formative assessment,focusing on the diversification of assessment subjects and assessment forms.Promoting the formation and development of English language ability in key competencies is one of the purposes of formative assessment.China’s Standards of English Language Ability(CSE)(2018)divides English language ability into English comprehension ability and English production ability,and the English comprehension ability includes listening comprehension ability and reading comprehension ability,which can be assessed by the self-assessment scale in CSE.In previous researches on language comprehension ability self-assessment,domestic scholars mainly took high school students or college students as the research subjects,but it was extremely rare to study senior high school students in ethnic minority areas such as Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.In addition,the research which adopts the CSE self-assessment scale as the assessment instrument has not yet been popularized and needs to be promoted.This study uses self-assessment scale of CSE and semi-structured interviews as research instruments to conduct a self-assessment research on language comprehension ability of 1107 students of all grades in eight senior high schools of Nanning city,This thesis intends to answer the following three questions:(1)Which level of English language comprehension ability of Nanning senior high school students of different grades have reached?(2)What are the English comprehension abilities of Nanning senior high school students of different genders ? Are there any significant differences?(3)Are there any differences among students from different social prestige schools in terms of English language comprehension ability and their methods and approaches to improving it ?After systematic analysis of the survey data,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)The mean of English listening comprehension ability of the Nanning senior high school students of the three grades has reached level two of self-assessment scale,and that of their English reading comprehension ability is close to level one.However,the mean of self-assessment score showed a trend of increasing with grades.(2)Female senior high school students in the first and second grades are slightly better than male senior high school students in listening comprehension ability,but there is no significant difference in listening comprehension ability of the third grade and in reading comprehension ability of the three grades.(3)Students from different social prestige schools have significant differences in English language comprehension ability.Students in schools with highest social prestige are significantly better in English language comprehension ability than those in second highest and lower schools.There are also certain differences in the methods of improving it.Finally,based on the results,the study puts forward suggestions from the aspects of teaching and learning to improve senior high school students’ English language comprehension ability,and discusses the prospects for future research.
