Yao Ke was a famous playwright, director and scholar in the history of modern Chinese literature. In the 40 s of the 20 th century,he devoted himself to the progressive theater activities in Shanghai, especially the historical drama Qing Palace Grievance, but at present, the academic community lacks sufficient research on his theatrical creation, and the value of his works needs to be re-evaluated.This thesis attempts to explore the characteristics and significance of Yao Ke’s drama creation based on a comprehensive collection of his drama creation, combined with the background of the times and Yao Ke’s own experience. The paper is divided into four chapters:The first chapter explores Yao Ke’s transition from theatrical translation to theatrical creation.Yao Ke translated plays before writing plays, which is related to the international education he received in the church university in his early years. His early theatrical translations broadened his horizons for later theatrical creation, and some of the aesthetic pursuits he embodied in his theatrical translation activities continued into his later theatrical creations. The second chapter explores Yao Ke’s theatrical work during the Anti-Japanese War.After returning to China in the 1940 s,Yao Ke began his theatrical work in the occupied areas.Influenced by the trend of historical dramas at that time,he created a number of historical dramas represented by Qing Palace Resentment,Chu Bawang and Beauty Count, establishing his position in the history of drama. In addition,he has created several plays in other genres.Whether it is Yao Ke’s historical dramas or other drama works, they all contain innovation and epochality.Chapter 3 discusses Yao Ke’s drama creation after his arrival in Hong Kong. After Yao Ke went to Hong Kong in 1948,he created historical dramas represented by Xi Shi and Qin Shi Huang, and social reality dramas represented by Burrowy Alley.Historical dramas basically continue the style of historical dramas during the Anti-Japanese War period, and social reality dramas reflect his realistic critique of Hong Kong’s social issues.Chapter 4 mainly analyzes the characteristics and significance of Yao Ke’s drama creation. In terms of creative characteristics, one is the equal emphasis on integration and innovation, and the other is the combination of history and literature.Yao Ke’s drama creation has significance and value that cannot be ignored in the history of drama during the Anti-Japanese War period and the history of Hong Kong drama.
