| Taking the novel Xu Sanguan Selling His Blood written by Yu Hua and the novel Kasi kogi written by Cho Chang-in as the object of comparative research,this paper adopts the commentary method of comparative literature to analyze the features of "paternal image" in both novels and compare the similarities and differences about "paternal love".In the modern society with more communications between China and South Korea,the understanding of "paternal love" has undergone many necessary changes.The contemporary literacies are not only the pure cultural products,but also the important media and materials to promote international understandings,develop friendly relations and communicate different cultures.Therefore,it is quite valuable to study the "paternal love" through the literacies in both countries.Although both novels have no direct connections with each other,the two writers share similar life experience and the background of times.Moreover,both novels based on the theme of "paternal love" were published almost in the same period.The researches on Yu Hua have always very popular at home and abroad.He has won countless honors,including the literary awards in Italy,France,China’s Taiwan,China’s Hong Kong and other countries and regions.Xu Sanguan Selling His Blood has been used by the Chinese Departments of Harvard University and Yale University as the material to understand Chinese society.The novel by Cho Chang-in ranked top in the annual sales at Kyobo Book Centre in 2000,and ranked top in comprehensive sales for 42 consecutive weeks.The cumulative circulation has exceeded 3 million copies and it was translated and published in 10 countries.Although there are many researches on both writers,no one has specifically conducted a comparative research on both of them.Both China and South Korea belong to the circle of East Asian with close economic,social,literature and cultural relations.So,it is very valuable to make a comparative study on both writers and analyze the interpretation of "paternal love" in their novels.This paper consists of six chapters.Chapter 1 gives the introduction to this paper,clarifies the purpose and significance of the research,summarizes the existing research of both writers at home and abroad,proposes the research method adopted in this paper.Chapter 2 introduces the writer’s growth background and the background of his novel.Yu Hua is a real pioneer writer.His father was a doctor,so he wrote the novel Xu Sanguan Selling His Blood based on the blood-selling memory of his father when the family was very poor.He regarded it as his responsibility to shape the real image of Chinese people in his novel.When Cho Chang-in worked as a reporter in the newspaper office and magazine office,he was inspired to create the novel Kasi kogi based on the tragic experience of his friend who had a sick son.Chapter 3 compares the features of "paternal image" in both novels.The"fathers" in both novels are great and selfless.Chapter 4 compares the similarities and differences of the images of"paternal love" in both novels.Both fathers are willing to sacrifice everything even their own health and life(blood and organs)to save their children.What’s different is that they show the understandings on "people" and"family love" in a different way.Chapter 5 explores the popular historical significance of the novels and the authors.Both novels show different appearances to the public,which results from the different values of both writher.The novels also reflect the spiritual values and aesthetic artistry of the writers,so this paper also studies their concept of value.Chapter 6 makes the summary.Based on the researches in this paper,we have a new understanding of the expression and interpretation of "paternal love"in both novels.However,due to the restriction of time and ability,some further researches on typical images of family ethics such as "maternal love","family"and "wife" have not been conducted.The themes such as "maternal love","family" and "wife" have also been attached importance by both writers,although they cannot be reflected in this paper. |
