Strategies For English-Chinese Translation Of Culture-Specific Items

The author of this report applies Javier Franco Aixelá’ strategies for translating CSIs in the E-C translation of an excerpt from the first four chapters of Pandora’s Jar:Women in Greek Myths written by Natalie Haynes,to explore the application of Aixelá’strategies in translating cultural texts rich in CSIs.These strategies are classified as conservation and substitution.Among them,SL repetition,transliteration,intratextual gloss and extratextual gloss belong to conservation,which are applied to convey the exoticism by conserving the cultural connotation and characteristics;TL repetition,limited universalization,absolute universalization,naturalization and autonomous creation belong to substitution,which are applicable to meet the expectations of the target readers by readable and understandable translation.On the whole,Aixelá’ strategies are practical and applicable in the translation of cultural texts rich in CSIs.Conservation strategies can be adopted to conserve the cultural characteristics of the source text and substitution strategies are employed when the TL readers should be taken into consideration.
