| This report focuses on the difficulties of interpreting high-density information in technical lectures and proposes corresponding interpreting tactics with Gile’s Effort Model as the theoretical guide.Based on this, the author selected the technical lecture given by Professor Li Yadong of Tsinghua University in 2021 with the theme of “Chemistry changes the world and chemistry creates the future” as the source for this simulated C-E simultaneous interpretation.Technical lectures are normally highly professional with high information density, which causes interpreters’ cognitive overload in the process of simultaneous interpretation, resulting in interpretation errors and omissions. Therefore, the author identified the processing of high-density information as the biggest difficulty in this simulated simultaneous interpretation practice. There are three main reasons for inducing high information density:(1)technical terms;(2)high speech rate;(3)insufficient redundancy in the source text.According to Daniel Gile’s Effort Model, the author believes that the reasonable use of interpretation tactics in the process of simultaneous interpretation can help coordinate the energy allocation in the stages of listening and analysis, memory, production, and coordination, thus effectively reducing the cognitive load of the interpreter and improving the quality of interpretation. On this basis, the author proposes the following interpretation tactics to deal with the difficulties in interpreting high information density in technical lectures:(1)To cope with the difficulties in interpreting the high information density induced by technical terms, the author adopts the interpreting tactics of omission and using acronym names;(2)To cope with the difficulties in interpreting the high information density induced by high speech rate, the author adopts the interpreting tactics of generalization, omission, and conversion;(3)To cope with the difficulties in interpreting the high information density induced by insufficient redundancy in the source text, the author adopts the interpreting tactics of substitution, amplification, and adding conjunction. These interpreting tactics can help interpreters successfully fulfill the task of Chinese-English simultaneous interpretation of technical lectures and provide them with references and suggestions. |
