Abstract/Summary:
Theater space,as a topic focusing on theater aesthetics, has not been fully developed from the perspective of postmodern fiction. The carnival characteristics and abnormal bodies and inclusion carried by the theater space not only reflect the postmodern pluralistic and heterogeneous style, but also participate in the novel’s writing of reconstructing power relations with the transformation of its internal spectator and performance relationship.Haunted and Nights at the Circus use the theater space as the main narrative space, and show the characteristics of grotesque bodies, disordered views of time, and the dissolution of supreme authority. It not only highlights the particularity of the theater space, but also adds a variety of possibilities for the interpretation of the novels. The first part of the thesis provides an overall description of the theater space based on the two novels.First, the theater space is classified from the perspective of style and function into three dimensions: personal psychological space, desire projection space and ritual space. Then points out the relationship between the theater space and other spaces in the novel text, and finally points out the particularity of the theater space itself. The anomaly is highlighted in the contrast of daily life, which not only shows the way the performer exists, but also stimulates the audience to reflect and question. The second part of the thesis delves into the interior of the theater space, focusing on the two sides of the audience and the body as an intermediary to analyze the constituent elements. It points out the objective state of the body in the theater space, and what deep meaning this state embodies. As the master of the body on the stage, the performer creates the atmosphere of the theater space through the abnormality of the body. The audience takes the body as the object of viewing, and how they are inspired by it and participate in the shaping of the theater space. It can embody the way that the audience participate in the discourse of power. The third part of the thesis discusses the narrative function of theater space in fictions, which mainly includes deconstructing logic, dissolving power, and telling the truth. The theater space creates sensory chaos through the defamiliarization of time, space, and metaphor to deconstruct the logic of everyday life.Changes in viewing relationships, physical deformation,self-abuse,and rewriting of past traditions have reversed the original one-way imposed power structure. The attention to the individual situation in the theater space shows that the so-called order is the product of the position, not the substance that can be completely canceled. The last part analyzes and compares the theater spaces in Haunted and Nights at the Circus, respectively.Firstly,it analyzes the two authors from their personal perspectives, pointing out their different attitudes towards the theater space. In the same situation,Palahniuk conveys an emotional attitude of pathos as beauty in the theater space, and Cater views the theater space with a pastoral eye.It is believed that the aesthetic style of the theater space in the two novels is different.
