| In modern society,a large amount of information is recorded and communicated in written form, and the emergence of visual symbols such as icons and letters has enriched the way humans communicate and think.Compared with alphabetic characters such as English, the most prominent feature of Chinese characters is the character morpheme syllable structure.Due to the significant differences between logogram and alphabetic characters, the neurocognitive mechanisms of logogram and alphabetic characters are different.Smartphone apps are playing an increasingly important role in modern life, with a large number of App icons involving symbols or text, which contain certain meanings. The focus of this study is to explore the differences in the neural mechanisms of APP icons and Chinese character recognition. The aim of the experiment is to determine the temporal and spatial models of brain activity related to this process by using event related potential(ERP)technology.Present familiar APP icons and unfamiliar APP icons, common Chinese characters and uncommon Chinese characters to the participants at a pseudo random manner, and the participants perform two tasks. The repeated detection task requires participants to determine whether the stimuli of the consecutive APP icons are the same; The cross change detection task requires participants to ignore the APP icons or Chinese characters on both sides of the display, focus their attention on the cross in the middle of the display, and react when observing a change in the length of the cross.Based on the results of two experimental tasks,we have come to the following conclusion:(1)Familiarity had an effect on visual stimulus processing. In the 200 –250 ms time window, familiar APP icons and unfamiliar APP icons, common Chinese characters and uncommon Chinese characters all induced N170.The N170 induced by familiar APP icons was significantly greater than that induced by unfamiliar APP icons, and the N170 induced by familiar Chinese characters was significantly earlier than that induced by unfamiliar Chinese characters, reflecting the general modal visual processing of APP icons and Chinese characters familiar visual stimulus.(2)There were differences between APP icons and early visual processing of Chinese characters. The N170 latency of Chinese characters was shorter than that of APP icons. The N170 latency difference between APP icons and Chinese characters reflected the specific processing mechanism of APP icons and Chinese characters.(3)Source analysis results showed that APP icons were mainly processed by the right brain, while Chinese characters were mainly processed by the left brain.N170 induced by APP icons had significant right brain lateralization, while N170 caused by Chinese characters had no significant lateralization, which indicated that the early process of object recognition responds to specific types of visual information and is related to strong lateralization. In the parieto occipital region, familiarity effect was reflected in pictures and characters recognition, which confirmed the main functional differences in human object recognition system, especially in the advantages of brain regions. There were significant cognitive mechanism differences between the processing of APP icons and Chinese characters. |
