William Gibson,a famous American science fiction writer,is known as the father of cyberpunk novels. He reflected his unique perspective and profound insight on the network virtual world into the real society, and pioneered science fiction from hard science fiction to the exploration of cyberspace. In Gibson’s masterpiece,Neuromancer,he depicts the battle between capital and technology in a dystopian post-human world of urban space, orbit space and cyberspace based on the late-capitalist society in which he lives. In light of Guy Debord’s theory of the society of the spectacle and the interpretation of his generations, the thesis intends to carry out a study of the society of the spectacle in Neuromancer in order to provide more ethical reflection and warning for the technical and capital problems that may be involved in the current and future global digital construction and digital economy development. The first chapter briefly introduces William Gibson and his novel Neuromancer, summarizes the domestic and foreign research status of this work, and dwells on the theoretical origin, significance and structure of the research. The second chapter summarizes the three main categories of spectacle patterns presented in the novel, analyzes their visual effects and visual mechanisms, and explores how they falsify and tamper with reality, and affect people’s psychology and behavior. The third chapter discusses the operational mechanism of the society of the spectacle in Gibson’s post-human world, including its logical root, controlling devices and ultimate goal. The fourth chapter analyzes the resistance strategies of the main characters in the novel to explore the possibility of post-human to resist and escape from the society of the spectacle. The fifth chapter summarizes the main arguments of the thesis and expounds the practical significance and contemporary value.According to the study, the society of the spectacle in Neuromancer is under the hegemony of the idea of capitalist economic supremacy, realizing the automated operation of the society and the eternal enslavement of human beings highly relied on the conspiracy of the spectacle and cutting-edge technology. In the post-human world of Neuromancer, the spectacle alienates, separates, controls, and eventually replaces and destroys human beings in a more invisible but rigorous way in order to maximize its cost for social regulation and domination. The spiritual power and subjective dignity of human beings gradually collapses, and even the physical existence is denied and erased to a large extent.
