| The National Language Movement during the Republican period was a movement to standardize the modern Chinese language with the goal of unifying the national language and script,and its influence was so far-reaching that it not only prompted changes in domestic textbooks,but also greatly contributed to the development of international Chinese textbooks.The Standard Mandarin Textbook,published in 1939,is a typical example of this process.This comprehensive Chinese language textbook for Germany,co-edited by German sinologist Erich Schmitt and Chinese scholar Lu Yi,fully reflects the new face of language and society after the unification of the national language,especially in terms of vocabulary and texts.Based on the background of the National Language Movement,the article first compares the Chinese language textbooks of this period,discusses the influence of the National Language Movement on the development of Chinese language textbooks,and gives an overview of the Standard Mandarin Textbook.In terms of vocabulary,supported by sociolinguistic theories,it explains the evolution of modern Mandarin words and the social phenomena and cultural connotations the words reflects,and concludes that the vocabulary is practical,innovative and combined with written and spoken words;and from the perspective of Chinese lexical construction,the author’s strategies for teaching vocabulary by using the meaning of Chinese morphemes are reviewed.In terms of texts,the texts written by the authors and the texts selected from the Chinese new literary works are separately analyzed to explore their contemporary features,linguistic characteristics,and the new culture,ideas and concepts they contain,revealing the author’s view of language and teaching as it evolves with the times.As the influential German textbook for Chinese language during the National Language Movement,the Standard Mandarin Textbook represents the milestone achievement of Chinese and German scholars in the cause of Chinese language teaching.Through a combination of historical and theoretical analysis,this thesis aims to provide a reference for the study of the international Chinese language textbooks and the study of the history of International Chinese Language Education. |
