A Study Into The Current Situation Of Original English Books’ Reading In Junior Middle School

To help students enhance their English reading ability,especially the reading ability of English original books,our school has established an English original library for students since 2016,arranged a weekly English original reading class with professional teachers and management personnel.The relevant requirements of the New Curriculum Standards in April 2022 prompted us to further improve.We need to understand the current situation,know the effectiveness and understand the shortcomings.Through daily teaching observation,this study first made a preliminary judgment and assumptions on the basic situation of students’ reading,the application of students’ reading strategies,and the state of students’ available reading guidance.A questionnaire was designed on this.After analyzing the data from the collected questionnaire,it was found that the results shown by the data were not quite consistent with the conclusions obtained through observation.For example,the author found that students would use reading strategies in the reading process,but some students gave negative responses in the questionnaire.This is because students only know what to do,but do not know why to do so.We need to guide students more carefully in future learning activities,so that students ‘know what it is,but also know why it is’.As for the reading guidance that students can get,this study mainly uses teacher interviews to make sure the importance teachers attach to this,the creation of class reading atmosphere,methods have been used to improve students’ reading ability,as well as what successful reading activities they have.Based on observations,questionnaires and interviews,this study puts forward relevant suggestions:1.consider students’ psychological characteristics,upgrade their reading ability in order;2.think deeply and help students find or design reading methods that match their own needs.Here are three specific suggestions: help students find appropriate ways to read the entire book;create opportunities for students to apply their language skills;provide forward-looking guidance and read for the future.This study also collates some of the outcome that have been achieved,such as successfully organized reading activities and approved book lists,which can be provided to students and teachers with similar needs.Next,we need to provide more in-depth and detailed reading guidance to students,introducing the method of data statistics into daily teaching activities,so that the very subjective process of reading can be presented in a more objective form.We also need to think more on the basis of the results achieved,and design more reading activities that meet the actual situation of our students to promote,encourage,and guide students to read more deeply.
