Paul Hindemith(1895-1963)was one of the most representative German composers in the early 20 th century and a prominent leader in modern Western music. He was on par with Strauss and Stravinsky and held a place of prominence internationally. He had involvement in various fields such as composition, conducting, performance, teaching, and theory. His works encompassed multiple genres such as opera, ballet, symphony, concerto, chamber music, and solo sonatas for various traditional instruments, with a significant number of compositions. This paper presents the first movement of Hindemith’s "Sonata Fur Flote und Klavier" as an example to understand the composer’s thought process, the period background of the creation, and the background of the work. This paper focuses on an in-depth analysis of the harmonic and formal structure of the first movement. In the second chapter of the paper,on the one hand, the different musical interpretations of the sonata by three performers are explored in depth, comparing their attention to detail and attempting to restore Hindemith’s musical style as much as possible. On the other hand, detailed and comprehensive analyses of the performance techniques for the flute, such as legato, staccato, tone color, breath control, and fingering, are provided. The study also provides corresponding practice methods or etudes for different technical difficulties or challenging sections of the music,to help performers overcome technical challenges. The paper deepens the understanding of the definition of neoclassicism and Hindemith’s creative style and objectively evaluates the work through practical analysis and related literature research, hoping to bring inspiration to future performers.
