| The construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is a major regional development strategy of our country. The release of the development plan in 2019 marks the integration process of the Greater Bay Area has entered a new historical stage. This paper focuses on Putonghua education planning in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Guangzhou, collects materials through literature review, qualitative interviews and questionnaires. In addition, this paper analyzes the materials by using the coding method of Classical Grounded Theory and the Three-dimensional Model Theory of language planning proposed by Bernard Spolsky.Though the analysis above, this paper may contribute to Putonghua education under the integration of the Greater Bay Area. The paper is divided into seven chapters.Chapter 1 is the introduction. It mainly introduces the background of this paper, the development process of language planning theory, and summarizes the language research under the macro-background of the construction of the Greater Bay Area. This chapter also introduces the research contents and methods,as well as expounds the academic and practical significance.Chapter 2 expounds the integration of the Greater Bay Area and the situation of Putonghua education in Guangzhou and Hong Kong. This chapter outlines the history and current situation of the Greater Bay Area, including the proposal of this strategy, the release of regional language planning documents, and the language tasks faced in current period.Besides,it also focuses on the situation of Putonghua education and education policy in Guangzhou, and combs the experience of popularizing Putonghua.Focusing on the situation of Putonghua education in Hong Kong, the paper clarifies the connotation of the policy of "Bi-literate and Tri-lingualism" and some other aspects.Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 are the two key chapters, which are respectively the pilot study and formal study of this paper.Chapter 3 is the pilot study of this paper, which is based on qualitative research methods. The pilot study includes the interviews of 30 students from universities in Hong Kong and Guangzhou,so as to understand their views on Putonghua education and the relationship between Putonghua and Cantonese. Then,by using the method of Classical Grounded Theory, the text content obtained from the interview is analyzed by three-level coding. The pilot study found that the motivation of students to learn Putonghua was different between this two cities, but there was generally a lack of self-confident in learning Putonghua.Besides, teachers’ level of Putonghua and language environment are the factors that affect their language acquisition.Chapter 4 is the formal study of this paper, which is based on quantitative questionnaire method. The Three-dimensional Model Theory of language planning proposed by Bernard Spolsky includes language practice, language beliefs or ideology and language management.Based on this model theory, this paper conducts a quantitative statistical analysis of 304 questionnaires. The formal study found that a part of students in Hong Kong learned Putonghua may missed the critical period of language acquisition;the level of Putonghua of Hong Kong students has gradually improved;Phonetics is the most difficult point for students in this two cities to learn Putonghua;Putonghua has different language status in this two cities, but the atmosphere has been unanimously affirmed by students from universities in Hong Kong and Guangzhou;Contrastive teaching in Putonghua and Cantonese is a existing phenomenon in this two cities.Chapter 5 summarizes three findings of the above investigation.Firstly, students from universities in Guangzhou and Hong Kong have a sense of linguistic insecurity when using Putonghua, and code-switching is one of the manifestations of linguistic insecurity.Secondly, the motivation of students from universities in Hong Kong to learn Putonghua are more likely be physiological needs and safety needs, but there has been a trend of transition to transcendence needs, while students from universities in Guangzhou are motivated by higher-level needs.Thirdly,it is instructive for "Great Chinese" education and the research on Putonghua education in the two cities and even the Greater Bay Area.Chapter 6 puts forward four suggestions for Putonghua education planning. The suggestions include promoting the linkage of Putonghua education within the Greater Bay Area, paying more attention to the national identity of Putonghua and the training of teachers, strengthening the prestige planning and status planning of Putonghua, and coordinating the relationship between Putonghua and Cantonese.Chapter 7 is the conclusion of this paper, which summarized the pilot study and formal study.Additionally, this part put forward the future prospects of defining the connotation and extension of Putonghua, and broadening the study on Putonghua teaching for non-Chinese-students in Hong Kong and Macao. The shortcomings of this paper are also pointed out at the end. |
