The four core qualities of English subjects: language ability,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability are specially emphasized in the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School(2017 edition).Among these core qualities,thinking quality refers to cultivate students’ abilities in logical,critical and creative thinking.In order to cultivate students’ thinking quality in senior high school,English reading class can be taken as the primary consideration,and teacher’s questioning also plays a vital role in promoting the development of students’ thinking quality.The subjects of this study are 149 students from grade one and two of Y senior school in G city and 114 English teachers from four high schools in G city and its subordinate countries.Based on Bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives,classroom observation,questionnaire and interview methods are used to investigate the current situation of teachers’ questioning on cultivating students’ thinking quality in English reading class.The purpose is to explore two questions:(1)The current situation of teachers’ questioning on the cultivation of students’ thinking quality in English reading class of senior high school.(2)The factors contribute to the situation of teachers’ questioning on the cultivation of students’ thinking quality.The results show that high school English teachers are aware of the importance of developing students’ thinking quality through questioning in reading class,but the concrete implementation is not optimistic.As for the distribution of questioning types,it is unbalanced.Teachers pay more attention to the cultivation of lower-order thinking,but ignore critical and creative higher-order thinking.The factors are from many aspects.Besides teachers’ teaching and training experience,students’ English ability,English class time,teaching materials and college entrance examination all influence the cultivation of students’ thinking quality through questioning.Based on the above research results,relevant suggestions are proposed in this study.First of all,teachers should pay attention to develop all levels thinking quality and enrich the types of questions oriented by the cultivation of critical and creative thinking.Secondly,teachers should take the initiative to participate in questioning training,and accumulate questioning experience in practice.Finally,the examination evaluation system related to thinking quality need to be further improved by experts and scholars. |
