| Edgar Allan Poe(1809-1849)is a famous American poet,novelist and literary critic.He is one of the most controversial literary giants in the history of American literature.He was not recognized by the American literary circle before his death,and his works were entrusted with inhuman works.After his death,his works were tampered with,and his image was stigmatized,which caused him to be spurned for half a century.A.H.Quinn(Prof.Patrick Quinn)the authoritative biography of Edgar Allan Poe Edgar Allan Poe: Poetry and Tales,1941)was published,and Edgar Allan Poe’s image was cleared up to a certain extent.This controversial situation exists not only in the local spread of Poe in the United States,but also in the spread of Poe and his works in other countries--after crossing the ocean to Europe,Asia and so on.He was sought after or questioned by French symbolism,English aestheticism,Russian symbolism writers and Chinese literary circles,and his image also produced a situation that was quite different from that of his own country.There is a certain difference.With the development of the society,the construction of Allan Poe’s image in the West developed synchronously with the times,and his image began to develop towards the same direction in the middle and late 20 th century.This paper attempts to present Poe’s translation and communication in different cultural contexts of China and the West and the resulting image differences,and further explore the underlying causes of such similarities and differences.In addition to the introduction,this paper is divided into four chapters:The first chapter focuses on the general situation of Edgar Allan Poe’s translation and image creation in China.First of all,with the help of Cao Minglun’s staging method,this paper divides Poe’s translation and introduction in China from 1905 to more than one hundred years into three stages: sporadic translation and introduction,systematic translation and repeated translation.Then,this paper summarizes the main characteristics of Poe’s image in the translation of Chinese cultural context,and tries to describe the evolution of Poe’s image during the hundred years of translation in China.In view of the blank of Poe’s translation formed in the special historical stage,the time limit of this thesis is: May 4th period to1949,reform and opening up to the present.The second chapter focuses on the translation and image generation of Edgar Allan Poe in western countries.This chapter focuses on Edgar Allan Poe’s translation and image creation in France,England,Russia and other European countries.After Allan Poe came to Europe from the United States,he was sought after by many famous scholars,which deeply influenced the development of French symbolism,English aestheticism and Russian symbolism.Based on the translation of Poe and his works in the above three countries,this chapter abstracts the translation of Poe and his works in English,English,France and Russia and the characteristics of Poe’s research.And through the acceptance of various countries to analyze Poe’s image generation.The third chapter mainly makes a comparative study on the differences of Allan Poe’s image generation in translation and communication in different cultural contexts.Going back to the real experience of Edgar Allan Poe and his works before and after his death in1849 in the context of American native culture,we find that there is a process from "stigma" to "justification" in American native culture context.What is more noteworthy is that this process does not seem to have a significant impact on the spread of Poe in China,but it has a great impact on the image generation in Western countries.Therefore,this chapter will focus on the analysis and comparison of the similarities and differences of Edgar Allan Poe’s image generation in the translation and communication between China and America and Europe and America.Chapter four mainly explores the reasons for the differences between Chinese and Western images in Edgar Allan Poe’s translation.This chapter analyzes the deep reasons of Poe’s different images in China,Europe and the United States,from the perspectives of social culture,literary trends and translators. |
