The Introduction and Variations was Schubert’s first work for flute, with a theme melody based on the theme from his vocal suite The Beautiful Mill Girl,No.18,The Withered Flower. It is an instrumental reissue of a vocal work which, going back upwards,is an excellent poem by the German lyric poet Wilhelm M ü ller-Seventy-seven Posthumous Poems of a Rambling Trumpeter in the Woods. The Beautiful Mill Girl is part of it.It is therefore an important example of romantic flute music, and was also the piece I played in my graduation concert. In this essay,I will use the piece Introduction and Variations as an example, and analyse the musical style, performance technique, historical heritage and artistic expression of the piece through literature, analysis of the score and performance practice. The author hopes that this essay will provide an accurate grasp of the style and performance of this work,as well as a valuable reference for Schubert’s other instrumental works. This thesis will be divided into four broad sections of argument. The first chapter is a brief biography of the composer Franz Schubert and his compositional habits. The second chapter is an exploration of the sources of the work. The third chapter is an analysis of the material, the score and the performance of the work. The fourth chapter is devoted to the accompaniment of the piano voices.
