Mobile social media is currently the most convenient and quickest medium for people to access information, but excessive use of mobile social media can have adverse effects on our physical and mental health, such as sleep problems and hypochondria.Previous studies have found that higher levels of fear of missing out are more likely to lead to mobile social media dependence and social media addiction. As university students are the most widespread users of mobile social media,it is essential to investigate the relationship between fear of missing out and mobile social media dependence among university students and the associated factors.A review of the literature reveals that the role of perceived social support is worth exploring. Therefore, this paper examines the moderating role of perceived social support in the relationship between different types of fear of missing out and mobile social media dependence through three studies.Study 1,we use questionnaires to explore the relationship between trait fear of missing out and mobile phone social media dependence, and the moderating role of perceived social support in it.Study 2 used questionnaires to investigate the moderating effect of perceived social support on the influence of state fear of missing out on mobile phone social media dependence. In order to further verify the moderating effect of Study 2,Study 3 used experimental methods to manipulate state fear of missing out and to verify the moderating effect of perceived social support. Finally, the impact of trait fear of missing out on mobile phone social media dependence and state fear of missing out.on mobile phone social media dependence were compared and analyzed. The results show that(1)compared with trait fear of missing out, state fear of missing out has a higher score and is more closely related to mobile phone social media dependence(2)Appreciated perceived social support only has a moderating effect on the relationship between state fear of missing out and mobile phone social media dependence.(3)Compared with low-level perceived social support, higher levels of Perceived social support have a greater impact on the relationship between state fear of missing out anxiety and mobile social media dependence. This study concluded that both trait and state fear of missing out were significant predictors of mobile social media dependence, and that perceived social support only moderated the relationship between state fear of missing out and mobile social media dependence. This suggests that the role of perceived social support varies in the face of different types of fear of missing out.
