In The "four monks of the early Qing Dynasty" in the history of painting,refers to the four Ming Dynasty relics of painting and calligraphy monks: Shi Tao,Zhu Da,Kun Can,Hong Ren.These four calligraphers and painters,in the context of the changing times of the Ming and Qing dynasties,all disappeared into Zen and chose a special way of life,putting their life’s misery and ideals into poetry,calligraphy and painting,and creating works of art full of strong personal emotions.By analyzing the performance of inscriptions,calligraphy and paintings in the works of the four monks,we can have a more comprehensive understanding of the four monks in the early Qing Dynasty and further explore the relationship between poetry,calligraphy and painting in Chinese traditional culture.This paper takes the inscriptions and calligraphy of the four monks in the early Qing Dynasty as the main object of study.First,the political background of the four monks and the development of inscription calligraphy before the early Qing Dynasty are explored,as well as the relationship between the art of Chinese painting inscriptions and traditional calligraphy and painting,so as to analyze the period and cultural factors that influenced the creation of the art of inscription calligraphy of the four monks in the early Qing Dynasty.Second,inscriptions participate in the picture of Chinese painting,and the painting styles of the four monks play a decisive role in the calligraphic styles of inscriptions.The common factors affecting the formation of the painting styles of the four monks and the causes of the "individual" differences of the painting styles of the four monks are discussed to explore the formation of the painting and calligraphy styles of the four monks.Again,the calligraphic styles of the four monks in their times are summarized,some representative works of calligraphy and painting of the four monks are listed and the characteristics of calligraphic style,brushwork,inking method and chapter layout of inscriptions and paintings in the works are analyzed to understand the style characteristics of the four monks’ inscriptions and calligraphy.Finally,the literary and aesthetic significance of the inscriptions on the paintings of the four monks is elaborated,and the revelation that the inscriptions and calligraphy of the four monks intermingle with traditional Chinese painting is summarized.
