Dance is shaped by,and not separate from cultural and social influences, trends and values.Ballroom dancing is an important and enduring leisure activity for a significant number of people.Researching and reflecting on ballroom dancing can help to illuminate important features of the society in which we live. The Sexual Politics of Ballroom Dancing, written by Vicki Harman, provides a well-researched,fascinating qualitative study of Ballroom dancing and marks a most valuable contribution to the leisure studies literature and to feminist work more widely. As a sociological text, this book demonstrates how social and gender relations play out on the Ballroom dancing floor. The author cites lots of quotations which reflects some dancers and scholars’ views and ideas from her own field notes as well as others’ academic researches to strengthen the book.Quotations in the original text involves a wide range of subjects, such as danceology, psychology, sociology and leisure studies related aspects, thus making it a meaningful task to some extent.Based on The Sexual Politics of Ballroom Dancing(chapterⅣ,chapterⅥ,chapterⅧ),this paper analyzes the pragmatic functions of quotations and explores its E-C translation methods from the perspective of pragmatic equivalence. In order to achieve the pragmatic meaning of quotations, the translator should have a good understanding of its original text. This paper discusses the pragmatic equivalence in linguistic context, pragmatic compensation in situational context and pragmatic substituting in cultural context.Pragmatic equivalence in translation can be divided into two part, namely pragma-linguistics oriented and socio-pragmatics oriented. In terms of pragma-linguistics equivalence, this paper summarizes the pragmatic conversion, pragmatic transfer and processing of pragmatic meaning used in the translation of quotations, including lexical conversion, conversion of affirmation and negation, morphological conversion, shift of emphasis, negation transfer, semantic addition, semantic fusion and semantic extension, thus according to the readers’ habits from the linguistic level and enhancing the pragma-linguistics equivalence of the quotation translation. In terms of socio-pragmatics equivalence, this paper analyses the translation methods from three perspectives: adjustment of the expression form of the quotation, transmission of cultural information and restoration of the communicative effect. It includes such common translation methods as sets translation, annotation translation and rhetorical translation. Finally, this paper draws a conclusion that appropriate adjustment on the quotation translation can convey the socio-pragmatics meaning implied by the original text better. This paper is based on a Ballroom dancing-related sociological text, which caters to the needs of those dancing enthusiasts. It is guided by pragmatic equivalence theory and focus on the translation of quotation, which provides a new theoretical guidance for translator.Through the translation of this excerpt, this paper hopes to strengthen people’s awareness of social relations in the Ballroom dancing and provide thoughts for the research of quotation translation in sociological texts.
