A Study On The Translation Methods For Terminology In San Ti Ⅰ & Ⅲ From The Perspective Of General Terminology Theory

Terminology plays a crucial role in the hard science fiction novel San Ti.The terms in San Ti not only lay the foundation for constructing the science fiction world in the novel but also embody the complex ideas and the core concepts of the worldview.Therefore,the accurate and appropriate translation of these terms is essential for readers to understand the content of the novel and the intention of the author.However,a review of the existing literature shows there is still some inadequacy in the research on the translation of San Ti.Most studies focus on translation theories at the macro level.Besides,although some studies involve terminology translation,the generalization of terminology translation methods fails to account for some cases.Based on the research methods and key notions of General Terminology Theory,this paper first clarifies the nature of terminology translation and constructs a system of terminology translation methods accordingly.Then,by means of case analysis,the translation strategies used in the English translation of San Ti are summarized.Through textual analysis,the study finds that the terms of San Ti can be divided into three categories according to the fields involved: cultural terms,techno-scientific terms and fictional neology.Translation methods adopted mainly fall into two categories: equivalent discovering and equivalent creating.Different translation methods are applied to different categories of terms.This paper aims to make up for the inadequacy of the translation study of San Ti and inform the terminology translation of other science fiction novels.This paper consists of five chapters.Chapter One provides background information on San Ti,elaborates on the importance of terminology translation,and describes the research purpose and methodology of this study.Chapter Two reviews previous research on terminology translation,as well as research on the translation of San Ti.Chapter Three starts with General Terminology Theory,introduces the key notions of General Terminology Theory,and explores the nature and methods of terminology translation specific examples.Chapter Four takes the terminology translation of San Ti as an example,using case analysis to analyze the application of General Terminology Theory in terminology translation practice.Chapter Five summarizes the research findings and limitations,and proposes some suggestions for future research.
