Abstract/Summary:
The protection of ecological environment is closely related to the survival of mankind. Therefore, ecology has always been one of the hot topics, and the study of translation of ecological texts has been widely concerned by experts and scholars. The source text,Insect Biodiversity, was written by Robert G.Foottit and Peter H.Adler.This book discusses the diversity of insects in different regions, such as the Arctic and Asia, and their impact on human society, taking into account the latest research findings of the time.Since this book is mainly aimed at scientists, scholars, and other professionals in related fields, its language is professional, logical, and well-structured,with long and difficult sentences and abstract nouns appearing frequently,in line with the characteristics of an academic text. The large number of abstract nouns in Insect Diversity makes the source text obscure and difficult to understand. How to better deal with abstract nouns,on the basis of accurately conveying the meaning of the source text,to make the target language readers fully understand and accept, and achieve the purpose of communication,is the difficulty and focus of this translation practice.Firstly, after comparison and classification, this report divides the abstract nouns in the source text into three categories: inherent abstract nouns, behavior abstract nouns and quality abstract nouns. Then,Under the guidance of Semantic Translation Theory, inherent, behavior and quality abstract nouns containing professional meaning can be translated by adopting terminologization.Under the guidance of Communicative Translation Theory, inherent abstract nouns and behavior abstract nouns containing specific meanings can be translated by adopting specification;some behavior and quality abstract nouns that are unreadable when translated literally can be translated by adopting conversion;some behavior and inherent abstract nouns that make the translation incomplete can be translated by adopting addition;some quality and inherent abstract nouns that make the sentence too long to read can be translated by adopting division. Thus, flexible translation methods can be adopted to deal with the translation of abstract nouns in academic texts to ensure the accuracy and communicativeness of the target text.Through this study of abstract nouns in academic texts,we hope to introduce new ideas for other researchers. At the same time, this report will help spread knowledge about biodiversity and improve readers’ awareness of ecological and environmental protection.
