| The reign of Zwentibald is a concrete manifestation of royal power at the end of the Carolingian and reflects the political, economic and cultural changes that took place in the Carolingian from the ninth century onwards,as well as the political development of the Kingdom of Lotharingia during this period. The first part begins with an introduction to the political, economic and human conditions in the Lotharingia region.Zwentibald’s dominion was narrower than under Lothar I,but covered all the core areas. The Lotaringian region was of great commercial and spiritual and cultural value, and the political games surrounding the region were intense, especially at the end of the Carolingian. The second part examines the early reign of Zwentibald.Zwentibald’s power was highly autonomous and authoritarian on many levels, and this was the main nature of his power.Between his coronation in 895 and 896,Zwentibald issued numerous documents, intervened in civil wars in the West Frankish kingdom, and gradually expanded his ruling clique, which reached its peak of power in 897,with the Church of Lotharingia, the Meuse valley nobility and the Liudolfings in the East Frankish kingdom all reinforcing Zwentibald’s authority. The third part looks at the crisis of Zwentibald’s rule, which began in 897 with the suppression of the great nobles of the country and was a great success in that year. After reaching the height of his power in 897,a new civil war broke out in 898 as a result of the sudden divisions and rivalries within Zwentibald’s ruling group. The new civil war led to the invasion of Charles the Simple, which caused a sharp decline in Zwentibald’s rule after the loss of the civil war.The fourth section deals with the end of Zwentibald’s rule and his personal demise. After a series of poor decisions, the conflict between Zwentibald and the Church of Trier finally erupted in 899,when Zwentibald once again made a major mistake and cut his political life short by striking Archbishop Ratpod of Trier with his cane. The participants in the Secret Council of St.Goar made a private agreement to plot against Zwentibald’s kingdom, and in 900,with the unanimous support of the nobles of Lotharingia,Louis the Child came to power in the kingdom of Lotharingia, and Zwentibald was on his way out, eventually becoming a bandit and dying in battle.Zwentibald’s reign reflects the ruthless abandonment of the Carolingian by a new era,a time of great economic, social, intellectual and political change in the ninth century. The Carolingian was the first to bear the brunt of these new changes, and in the face of them, the Garolingian rulers struggled to adapt to the changes, but their power weakened,as exemplified by Zwentibald, whose power was insufficient to sustain his rule over the kingdom of Lotharingia, and who ultimately paid with his life to defend his kingship. |
