| People often judge a person’s inner traits by their face,and believe that people with high facial attractiveness have more positive traits than those with low attractiveness,that is,"what is beautiful is good" Facial attractiveness is stereotype impression.With the popularization of mobile phone camera functions and photo editing software,people often make photos to enhance their external image.However,it is unclear whether this kind of appearance enhancement achieved by beautification software can also improve the attractiveness of individual faces,and in turn lead to people’s judgments of their internal characteristics.The mate selection mechanism in the theory of evolution shows that women’s appearance,health and youth play a more important role,while men’s social status and resources are more important.Are there gender differences in the impact of beautification on attractiveness and moral evaluation?Familiarity with faces can also increase positive evaluations of faces,showing a "what is familiar is good" phenomenon.Different from the change of facial stimuli caused by beautification,familiarity refers to the increase of evaluator’s experience with facial stimuli,which affects people’s judgment of faces.It is unclear whether familiarity can have a general enhancing effect on attractiveness and character evaluations based on the "what is familiar is good" basis.And,when familiarity and beautification occur simultaneously,does familiarity change the effect of beautification on facial attractiveness and moral evaluation? Familiarity includes visual perceptual familiarity and knowledge-based familiarity.The two kinds of familiarity obtain different experiences.Is there any difference in the impact of the two kinds of familiarity on it?This article uses three studies to examine whether men’s and women’s facial beautification affects attractiveness and moral evaluation.And whether visual familiarity from repeated exposure and knowledge-based familiarity from real-world exposure would alter this effect.Study 1 included an experiment in which faces were beautified to explore how male or female face beautification affects attractiveness and moral evaluation.In Experiment1,a 6-point scoring paradigm was used,and subjects were asked to evaluate the three qualities of facial attractiveness and relationship,vitality,and conscientiousness before and after beautification.The results show that after beautification,the attractiveness of the face increases,and the three moral evaluations also increase,and the mediation analysis results show that beautification improves the moral evaluation by improving the attractiveness of the face,that is,there is a "beautification effect".Moreover,beautification improves the attractiveness and vitality of female faces significantly more than that of male faces,that is,there is a gender difference in the beautification effect.Study 2 includes two experiments,which increase familiarity by repeatedly exposing faces,and explore whether repeated exposure to familiarity will increase the attractiveness and moral evaluation of male and female faces,and whether it will affect the "beautification effect" in Experiment 1.Experiment 2 used a single exposure of 50 ms and accumulated 10 times of simple exposure and Experiment 3 adopted a single exposure of 2000 ms and accumulated 10 times of simple exposure,and then asked the subjects to compare the attractiveness and morality of the face pictures that were repeatedly exposed or not repeatedly exposed before and after beautification.evaluate.The results showed that 50 ms repeated exposure familiarity could not improve face attractiveness and moral evaluation,but 2000 ms repeated exposure familiarity could improve face attractiveness,relationship and conscientiousness evaluation,but not vitality evaluation.And study 2 found that repeated exposure to familiarity eliminated the gender difference in the beautification effect of conscientiousness.The conscientiousness improvement of beautification for unfamiliar female faces was significantly greater than that of male faces,but there was no gender difference in the conscientiousness evaluation improvement of beautification for familiar faces.Study 2 also found that beautification improves the attractiveness and vitality of female faces significantly more than that of male faces,that is,there is a gender difference in the beautification effect.Study 3 included an experiment to investigate whether familiarity with real contact increases face attractiveness and character ratings,and what effect this has on the "beautification effect".Experiment 4 adopted a 6-point scoring paradigm.Classmates and strangers who had one-year real contact experience with face pictures were required to evaluate the attractiveness,relationship and vitality of the faces before and after beautification,but the evaluation of conscientiousness could not be improved.And study3 found that real contact with familiarity eliminates the gender difference in the beautification effect of attractiveness,and the improvement of the attractiveness evaluation of unfamiliar female faces is significantly greater than that of male faces,but there is no gender difference in the evaluation of the attractiveness of familiar faces.Study 3 also found that beautification improves the vitality of female faces significantly more than that of male faces,that is,there is a gender difference in the beautification effect.To sum up,this study found that facial beautification can enhance attractiveness,and then improve the three moral evaluations of relationship,vitality,and conscientiousness,and there is a stereotype of "beautiful is good".However,the effect of familiarity is different.Repeated exposure of familiarity can also improve the evaluation of face attractiveness,relationship and conscientiousness,but not the evaluation of vitality;real exposure of familiarity can improve the evaluation of attractiveness,relationship and vitality,but not the evaluation of conscientiousness.The research suggests that beautification and familiarity have different effects on individual moral charatcter valuation.The study also found that there are gender differences in the improvement of attractiveness and vitality evaluation of beautification,and the improvement of female faces is greater than that of male faces.This may be due to the mate selection mechanism.Compared with male,female’s appearance,health and youth are more important.role.In addition,repeated exposure familiarity can eliminate the gender difference in the improvement of vitality evaluation by beautification,and real exposure familiarity can eliminate the gender difference in the improvement of attractiveness evaluation.The findings of this study help to advance the understanding of individual moral evaluation. |
