Tragedy is an important category of Western aesthetics and has always been an important research topic in the academic community. Its development and evolution often have its own stage and era characteristics.Against the backdrop of social unrest and political chaos in Europe in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, tragic conflicts such as illness, war, rebellion, and sacrifice directly reflected the common social contradictions and conflicts at that time, and carried almost all the tragic themes of that time in various types of art. From romanticism, which depicts heroes and war tragedies,to expressionism, which expresses personality and emotional tragedies, the aesthetics of artistic works has changed. This article focuses on Edvard Munch’s paintings and the historical background in which he emerged.Through an analysis of his upbringing environment, cultural atmosphere, and personality traits,it attempts to explore the underlying reasons for his tragic consciousness in his paintings.Munch closely connects art with social, cultural, and personal factors, holds a critical attitude towards capital culture and art,and relentlessly struggles against tragic fate.Through his paintings,Munch presents his reflection and expression on the tragedy of the times and individuals, and through his works,he reveals a profound and intense sense of tragedy. At the same time,Munch’s paintings share similar tragic themes as early Western dramas: life, love, time,God,and the tragic fate of nature and humanity under desire.Taking Western tragedy theory as a reference, this study interprets the themes of life, love, death, and disease in Munch’s paintings from the aesthetic perspective of tragedy and tragic consciousness. It plans to use methods such as iconography, sociology, art, and stylistic analysis to analyze the tragic presentation and factors of Monk’s paintings,as well as the underlying ethical substantive characteristics hidden in these forms and factors.Revealing the deep essence of Munch’s works-the reflection of tragedy on issues such as human, life, human nature, society, and ethics. The tragic conflicts in social life have made artists pay more attention to practical contradictions in aesthetic forms and created the value of tragic art.By analyzing the tragic consciousness and spirit of Munch’s works, this article explains the humanistic consciousness and essence of life under his tragic rebellious spirit,re-examines the status and role of tragic consciousness in Munch’s paintings, further explores its impact on contemporary art,as well as the significance of exhibition dissemination, and opens up a new perspective for Munch’s painting research.
