BACKGROUND: Stopping the current ongoing behavior in time is called response inhibition. Some behavioral and physiological mechanism studies point out that professionally trained athletes in open events have stronger response inhibition ability.Table tennis is a typical open sport. To study the changes of cerebral cortex inhibition level of high-level table tennis players in the process of response inhibition,It will help to reveal the role of open exercise training in the change of neuroplasticity in the inhibition of brain response.Based on this, this study aims to explore the temporal dynamic changes of corticospinal excitability and cortical inhibitory neural circuits in table tennis players during the process of response inhibition.METHOD:(1)Experiment 1 selected 35 athletes from the open event basketball group, table tennis group, and football group,37 athletes from the closed event martial arts group,36 athletes from the track and field group, and 35 ordinary college students. The participants were required to complete the stop signal task(SST)experiment task with a 25% probability of stop occurrence. And control the accuracy rate of the stop test to around 50%,and compare the differences in indicators such as stop signal reaction time(SSRT)among each group of participants during the reaction inhibition process;(2)Experiment 2 selected a table tennis group of 34 people, one of the representative open sports events, and an ordinary college student group of 35 people. While the subjects were undergoing stop signal tasks, single pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation(sp TMS)was sent to monitor the 120 ms,160ms,and The time dynamic changes of corticospinal excitability in the left primary motor cortex of 200 ms table tennis players and ordinary college students during the process of response inhibition;(3)Experiment 3 selected 30 table tennis players and 31 ordinary college students as participants.Paired pulse TMS(pp TMS)was sent while the participants completed the stop signal task.Cortical excitatory and inhibitory loop indicators were selected, and short-term intracortical inhibition(SICI),intracortical facilitation(ICF),and Long term intracortical inhibition(LICI)explores the time dynamic changes of the inner cortical circuit in the left primary motor cortex of table tennis players and ordinary college students during the process of response inhibition in 120 ms,160ms and 200 ms after the occurrence of task stimuli at three levels.RESULT:(1)Compared to the closed event martial arts group and college student group, the basketball, table tennis, and football groups in the open event had more agile SSRT,and there was no significant difference between the basketball, table tennis, and football groups;(2)On the level of corticospinal excitability, the group and time point Main effect between the table tennis group and the college students group were significant, and the motor evoked potential(MEP)in the 120 ms,160 s,and 200 ms table tennis groups were higher than that in the college students group during the reaction inhibition process, and the interaction between the two groups was not significant;(3)The inhibition level of SICI loop was significantly different among groups. The inhibition level of table tennis group was stronger than that of college students, and the Main effect and interaction effect of the two were not significant at the time point; In the LICI loop, the Main effect was significant at the time point.Multiple comparisons after the event showed that there was a significant difference in MEP ratio between 160 ms and 200 ms,but not at other time points; The group Main effect and the interaction between them were not significant; In the ICF loop, the group, time point Main effect and their interaction effects were not significant.CONCLUSION: Athletes in open events have stronger ability to suppress reactions. As one of their typical open events, table tennis has a higher advantage in response inhibition at the physiological level, which is reflected in higher corticospinal excitability. At different levels within the cortex, the table tennis group has a stronger advantage in response inhibition in the SICI loop, and the participation of the LICI loop is high in the middle and late stages of response inhibition,The ICF loop has limited involvement in the reaction inhibition process. This study revealed the physiological mechanism of the dynamic changes of the cerebral cortex and the inner cortical loop participation level and time in the process of response inhibition between table tennis players and college students, and provided some physiological reference for the selection of talents for open sports events,as well as the direction of response control training for special groups such as Parkinson’s and autism.
