| The 15 stories in James Joyce’s Dubliners, all set in the author’s home city of Dublin, are a profound revelation of the numbness, lethargy and paralysis that pervades Irish society.Because of his original novel art and his unique aesthetic thought, this work has aroused heated discussion in the academic circle. This thesis uses Shendan’s dual narrative progression and combines the influence of Nietzsche’s philosophical thought of spiritual transformation on Joyce to interpret the dual narrative progression of the 15 stories in the collection from the dimensions of religion, colonization, emotion and public life, from the covert progression to see the spiritual paralysis of Dubliners in Joyce’s works, and from the covert progression to explain the spiritual transformation of Dubliners in Joyce’s insights. It aims to highlight the work’s diagnostic view of Irish society and Joyce’s complex feelings about Ireland. This thesis is made up of three parts. The first part is the introduction, which introduces Joyce and Dubliners, the comments of experts and scholars on this work in recent years,as well as the related theory of dual narrative progression, methods and ideas. The second part is the main body of the thesis, which is divided into four chapters. The first chapter interprets the dual narrative progression of The Sisters and Grace, and analyzes the ideological imprisonment of Dubliners by religion and the awakening of Dubliners from the oppression of religion. The second chapter, based on the colonial history of Ireland, takes An Encounter,After the Race,Clay and Ivy Day in the Committee Room as examples to analyze the colonial trauma left by Irish history and the potential national consciousness of the people. The third chapter analyzes the stories describing Dubliners’ emotions, such as Araby,Evelyn,A Little Cloud,Counterparts, and A Painful Case.It reveals that although Irish people are trapped in the cage of emotions and cannot realize their inner freedom, the disillusionment is also a process of self-exploration.They also recognize reality and stay in the moment. The fourth chapter shows from the stories of The Dead,The Boarding House,A Mother and Two Gallants, indicating the stagnation and ugliness of public life in Ireland,as well as the struggle of people to pursue their ideal life. The last part is the conclusion, which restates the thesis and summarizes the above content comprehensively. |
