Since UNESCO proposed and promoted education for international understanding,the idea of education for international understanding has gradually been recognized and accepted by all countries.With the advent of the era of globalization,education for international understanding is increasingly receiving deep concern in the field of education around the world,and cultivating international talents with international vision has become the focus of today’s education.China is paying more and more attention to strengthening education for international understanding in primary and secondary schools and cultivating students’ core literacy of international understanding.Since textbooks are the main materials for education for international understanding in foreign language curriculum,it is important to explore international understanding contents in textbooks.The purpose of this study is to evaluate the contents of PEP senior high school English textbook(2019)from the perspective of education for international understanding,analyze its characteristics and problems,and investigate whether the content of the current English textbook reflects the concept of education for international understanding.This study takes Collins,Czarra and Smith’s(1996)classification of global education themes as the main theoretical framework to classify education for international understanding into three major themes.The research subject of this thesis is PEP senior high school English textbook(2019).The contents of international understanding in the textbook is analyzed using the content analysis method and case study method.This research focuses on the following questions: 1.From the perspective of education for international understanding,what are the characteristics of the contents in the senior high school English textbook? 2.From the perspective of education for international understanding,what are the problems of the contents in the senior high school English textbook? How should they be improved?After analyzing the contents of the textbook from the perspective of education for international understanding,it can be seen that the contents of senior high school English textbook reflects the concept of education for international understanding to a certain extent.The contents of the textbook are helpful for students to expand their international vision and enhance their international understanding.The study finds that the contents of PEP senior high school English textbook(2019)have the following characteristics: firstly,the international understanding contents in senior high school English textbook are rich,and cover a wide range of themes,which is conducive to cultivating students’ international understanding ability;secondly,the contents of the textbook focus on the presentation of national content;thirdly,the contents of the textbook reflect the development trend of the times and are close to students’ life.Although PEP senior high school English textbook(2019)reflects the concept of education for international understanding to a certain extent,the contents of the textbook also have the following problems: the proportion of thematic contents is uneven and tends to be heavily imbalanced;the number of different thematic contents is not evenly distributed,which is not conducive to sustained education for international understanding;the contents of the textbook focus on great powers in developed and developing countries,lacking attention to less developed regions.Finally,in view of the problems in the contents arrangement of the textbook,several suggestions are provided from the aspects of textbook compilers and teachers to promote the improvement of the contents of PEP senior high school English textbook(2019)and improve the efficiency of teachers’ use of the textbook in the teaching process.
