Pottery drinking vessels are common burial objects from Han tombs in Shaanxi and Gansu, and used to be mistaken for make-up boxes. The name was later corrected by scholars such as Yu Weichao,Guo Yong,Wang Zhenduo,Ma Chengyuan, and Sun Ji,and was widely recognized by the academic community, and the name of the artifact is now uncontroversial.A large number of pottery drinking vessels have been archaeologically excavated from Han Dynasty tombs in Shaanxi and Gansu. It is a complex and diverse type, including two categories of straight and basin-shaped pottery drinking vessels, and the material can be divided into gray and red pottery, and the process includes gray pottery decorated with color painting and red pottery with lowtemperature lead glaze. Its complex ornamentation is very characteristic of the Han Dynasty. This paper extensively collects and organizes the archaeological excavation reports of Han tombs excavated in Shaanxi and Gansu, and collects a total of 375 pieces of various types of pottery drinking vessels. On this basis, the archaeological typology was first applied to the typology of the included pottery drinking vessels, and then the phasing study was conducted in conjunction with the excavated burial form, the combination of excavated funerary objects, bronze mirrors and bronze coins, and other artifacts for which dating scales had been successfully established.Second, the motifs on the pottery bottles are combined with mainstream historical documents to explore the cultural significance of the motifs.Once again, the above arguments are used in combination to analyze the social thought and funerary concepts reflected in the pottery drinking vessels excavated from the Han tombs. Finally,it summarizes the whole text and further elaborates the paper’s view that the shape of the pottery drinking vessels reflects the social thought that death is like life, while the decoration on it reflects the Han Dynasty ancestors’ funerary belief in the ascension to immortality.
