In recent years, with the rapid development of digital media, digital narratives have become rich and diverse in content and form.As a type of digital narrative, game narrative provides audiences with entertaining content and profound value concepts through its unique interactive entertainment features and digital storytelling capabilities. It also embodies the cultural charm and artistic value of games. This paper analyzes the digital narrative design framework and immersion concept in Marie-Laure Ryan’s theory of digital narrative, and explores the applicable textual structure for electronic games.Furthermore, guided by the theory of digital narrative, the paper analyzes the digital narrative and immersion design of the exemplary game The Last of Us and provides insights into the future development of game narratives, offering some creative inspirations.Firstly, the paper defines the concepts of digital narrative and electronic games, introduces Marie-Laure Ryan’s theory of digital narrative, and outlines the historical evolution of digital narrative theory and its cultural background, thus clarifying the scope of theoretical research in the paper.Secondly, from the perspective of digital narrative theory, the paper analyzes the applicable textual structure for electronic games, and then analyzes The Last of Us from three dimensions: plot types, plot development, and interactive structure in digital narrative theory. The paper also studies the game’s techniques for advancing storytelling and interactive rhythm.Thirdly, guided by Ryan’s theory of immersion, the paper examines the interactive patterns and four types of immersion in The Last of Us,elucidating the impact of different interactive patterns on game narrative and immersion. It further analyzes the conditions for immersion in the case study from four aspects: space, cognition, time, and emotion, and expounds on the influence of immersion on the game narrative experience. Finally, combining theory, the paper proposes that narrative design in games can prioritize storytelling and interactivity based on plot types. It suggests establishing appropriate plot development and interactive structures according to narrative purposes.Additionally,it offers recommendations such as relinquishing control of the camera and assigning hidden tasks to assist game narrative,as well as creating immersive experiences in games from the aspects of environment, puzzles, suspense, and emotion, while expressing the cultural connotations of electronic games.
