| Misinformation and fake news are raging on social media platforms where anyone can create and spread misinformation and fake news can reach thousands or even millions of people.What’s worse,individuals are susceptible to falling for blatantly fake news.Taking that into account,the translator chose to translate the scientific paper named “Reliance on Emotion Promotes Belief in Fake News.” As a scientific paper,the source text primarily focuses on presenting the experimental materials and procedures used in two studies,interpreting and discussing the experimental results,and exploring the limitations of the research.And it has concluded that “reliance on emotion promotes belief in fake news”.Therefore,the Chinese translation of this paper can provide a fresh perspective for domestic research.This report provides an analysis of the lexical,syntactic,and textual features of the source text.It also categorizes the challenges encountered during the translation process into three points: 1.How to achieve textual coherence and conciseness in the translated text;2.Many sentences are expanded through participle phrases and prepositional phrases that serve as post-modifiers or adverbials,thus adjustments of the syntactic structure are required due to the differences between English and Chinese;3.The stative state of expressing in English is more significant in this scientific paper,due in part to the wide use of nominalization.Through the analysis and classification of the challenging sentences,the translator finds that Catford’s translation shifts theory can provide practical guidance to the mentioned difficulties,especially the structure shifts,unit shifts,and class shifts under category shifts.In the end,this report will illustrate how the translator uses the above three shifts to solve translation difficulties arising from the differences between Chinese and English,hoping it can serve as a valuable reference for translation work in relevant fields. |
