The study of personal names is a comprehensive study involving linguistics,sociology,cultural studies,folklore and other disciplines.The study of personal names in China started late,but judging from the monographs and papers published in China in the past forty years,the study of personal names has attracted the attention of more and more scholars in the domestic academic community.At present,domestic scholars have also done comprehensive studies on personal names,but they have failed to provide a comprehensive overview of the development trends and dynamics of personal name research in China in the last forty years.As a bridge between existing research and current research,a literature review is an important rationale for conducting current research.In order to prepare for the advancement of future research on Chinese names,a review study of Chinese name research is essential.This paper collates the research of 121 monographs and 3,365 journal articles and dissertations published in the past forty years,and on this basis,we present a phased review of the research results on Chinese personal names in the past forty years.The full text is divided into five parts:Chapter 1,the introductory part.Chapter 1,Introduction,explains the reason for choosing the topic,the current situation of the research,the research method and the relevant descriptions.The current status of research on Chinese personal names is outlined,and the need for and value of a review of personal name research is further defined.Finally,a description is given to illustrate this study in relation to the treatment of personal name materials.Chapter 2,the analysis of the sources of Chinese personal name materials.The sources of materials in the study of Chinese personal names in the last forty years are analysed categorically.The main sources include newspapers,ancient and modern literary works,history books,dictionaries,indexes,genealogies of surnames,etc.,film and television materials(mainly including operas,films and television dramas),excavated documentary materials(mainly including inscriptions,oracle bone inscriptions and bronze inscriptions),and databases,etc.The different sources of materials are classified and organised,and the characteristics of the sources from different periods are summarised.Chapter 3,Content analysis of Chinese personal names research.The author has collated the works and literature on Chinese personal names in the past forty years,mainly from the following aspects: research on personal names from a cultural perspective;research on personal names from a linguistic perspective;research on personal names from a translation perspective;research on personal names from a philological perspective;research on personal names from a literary and artistic perspective;and research on computer-related personal names.The author categorizes the literature according to the above categories in stages and summarizes the research results on Chinese personal names in different periods.Chapter 4,the analysis of research methods on Chinese personal names.The research methods used in all the literature are categorised and analysed.The main methods include documentary research,survey analysis,induction,quantitative analysis,qualitative analysis,case study,modelling,comparative research,and theoretical analysis.The different research methods are sorted out in stages,and the transformation of the research methods of Chinese personal names in the past forty years is summarized.Chapter 5,Conclusion and Prospect.It summarizes the research results and research gaps of Chinese personal names in the past forty years,and proposes suggestions and outlooks for future research work on personal names.
