A Report On The Translation Of Understanding Suffering In Schools: Shining A Light On The Dark Places Of Education(chapter 1)

This is a report on a translation of Joseph Polizzi and William C.Frick’s Understanding Suffering in Schools: Shining A Light on the Dark Places of Education(Chapter 1),which introduces to the reader the impact of problems in schooling on the growth and development of students through testimonies provided by interviewees about the pain they experienced in school.An appropriate translation of such informative text requires collection and understanding of background knowledge on the current state of research on the problems of school education and its impact on students’ growth and development,and also elaboration of a precise and appropriate translation of the testimonies in a perspective of the interviewees of different ages and identities.Therefore,under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the translator takes the four aspects of dynamic equivalence as the principle of translation and chooses the learned translation methods such as annotation,repetition,conversion of part of speech of words,division and inversion in the translation process for an accurate transmission of the source text by breaking free the structure of the source language for the effect of greater fluency and readability.This report shows the problems encountered in translation,adopts appropriate translation methods,summarizes the translator’s experience,and points out the problems to be solved,with the aim of helping language learners and educational researchers to benefit from it and thus effectively improve language learning and teaching skills.
